It is often said that every disaster movie starts with a scientist being ignored. The current one has started with tens of thousands of scientists being ignored by the U.S. government, delivering us to a place where “science” is whatever information supports a person’s already entrenched beliefs.

Imagine being rich enough to do anything you want and choosing to take food and medicine from starving children to give yourself even more money.

From now on, I'm going to assume that a novel zoonotic pathogen can cause permanent damage to multiple organ systems until proven otherwise

I’ve found it helpful to somewhat regularly ask it about its training details - e.g. learning that ChatGPT was only trained with data through early 2023 and asking it to identify biases in its training and answers so I can keep those biases very front of mind.

Finland is teaching children in school how to recognize fake news and propaganda as part of critical thinking and civic responsibility. Some of this will seem very familiar.
