FWIW git branches are almost free and I make heavy use of them. I think of them as saved games, and *every* time I'm about to do something non-trivial in git at the command line, I make a new local branch. Dealing with git can be like an end-of level boss, so always save your game!

In case you're not aware of it: "git add -p" lets you choose specific changes within changed files. Combined with other git commands it lets you organize your changes (or lose work when one inevitably gets something wrong...)
