As a reader, so many of my personal 'best books of the year' are books that came out years ago and that I only just read now. The first year your book is out isn't the only time for it to connect with readers.

That's a very good point, and I think it's so important to encourage those decoding skills (especially now with so much video content everywhere). But as a writer, I don't necessarily need those visual comprehension skills if they get a similar creative/mental experience of the story from audio.

It’s also super ableist to suggest audiobooks don’t count as reading. My grandma had glaucoma for years but listened to a ton of audiobooks. Readers have different needs and different formats provide support.

Visually reading each word or audibly absorbing each word means you’re taking in the story. You’re thinking about the characters. You’re mentally engaged with the plot and themes. Why should the format matter?

I saw a video of a writer who claims that audiobooks don’t count as reading in part because that’s not the way the author intended the reader to absorb that material.

I completely disagree. I don’t see the words on the page as the essential aspect of the story.
