I think it’s that they have successfully made believing certain things statements of group loyalty and identity. They remain statements of group loyalty even if they are untrue. Especially if they’re untrue.

I try to tell myself “she a little confused but she got the spirit,” knowing that democracy requires building a electoral coalition with people you would find too stupid and annoying to seek out or talk to.

Knowing things is a sign that you're more loyal to the truth than the group. It's not just a disease afflicting conservatives, sadly. It's human nature.
