05.05.2025 17:13 β π 5 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0Dear Preet, I enjoyed your Q&A regarding "Attorneys General." If "general" is an adjective (from French), why have we seen characters in TV shows, like Billions, a reliable legal authority, refer to an AG using the nickname "General?" Do people really call AGs "General," and if so, is that improper?

That makes 5 of 18 Big Ten senates who've adopted MADCs:
Rutgers
Nebraska
Indiana
Michigan State
Michigan
And also UMass-Amherst. CUNY's Hunter College votes on Wednesday.
Add YOUR faculty senate to the list, and DM me if I can help you with connections, advice, or anything! Share widely!!
As a member of Rutgers Senate, I'm proud of its leadership in creating and advocating for the Big Ten academic mutual defense compact
21.04.2025 14:57 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0If there were a Dow Jones measuring federal public health, it would show weβre in dire straits. But since thereβs not, and it doesnβt affect bank accounts in real time, it fades as new outrages take center stage. But the situation is still dire and will get worse quietly until the next crisis.

07.04.2025 00:56 β π 5410 π 1487 π¬ 98 π 53Excerpt from Rutgers University Senate resolution calling for a Mutual Academic Defense Compact. The excerpt reads: "BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Rutgers University Senate urges the President of Rutgers University to formally propose and help establish a Mutual Academic Defense Compact (MADC) among all members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, under this compact, all participating institutions shall commit meaningful funding to a shared or distributed defense fund. This fund shall be used to provide immediate and strategic support to any member institution under direct political or legal infringement;"
This exciting resolution from Rutgers University Senate is exactly the kind of model I think higher ed needs: a mutual defense pact of, in this case, Big 10 schools. They call for member institutions to create a joint defense fund and make resources available to any member institution under attack.
