I grew up in New Delhi, so take it from me: This is how to deal with Toronto’s worsening air quality I plan my trips to New Delhi with air quality in mind; with air quality increasingly bad in Toronto we are doing the same thing

Good if worrying piece by Aparita Bhandari on living with the new normal of smoky skies during the summer. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

That's helpful, thanks! Yeah, I had also sort of shifted to a mix of Google, blogs, YouTube etc... just hard to find trusted sources

I am quite surprised this. I had written off Yelp... though I couldn't really tell you why. Is it in fact useful?

Not far out from release day for The Right of the People, folks. If you don't hear me raving about the revolutionary promise of democracy on your favorite podcast in the next couple weeks, don't fret β€” you can also just buy the book!

Yes? That and, oddly enough, an encapsulation of my week

Typing on a keyboard with stuck keys feels like cycling into a headwind: you can still do it, but it's just harder.

if one were to list a series of positives and negatives about a person, placing traits into "pro" and "con" columns, I would have strong feelings about where "liking the music of Katy Perry" would go

I sort of understand why people use Twitter. Most things in one's life are tied somehow to awful things and awful people, so people continue to use it in a "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" kind of way. Still unsure, tho, how this sort of thing doesn't cross a line for most

Um, I blithely posted something snarky about this yesterday. Turns out this was Barbara Everett's final piece and she passed in April. Apologies.

Very true, but there's an element of fantasy or desire involved - one contorts oneself not to the technology exactly, but the fantasy of the presumed subject using the technology (think Apple marketing etc. One wants to become that etc.)

29.07.2025 16:45 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I mean, Bsky is not the place to discuss one's abstract interest in a technology, but it is interesting how one can look at a piece of tech and start to invent reasons or scenarios to use them i.e. in theory, one shapes oneself to the tech rather than the other way around

29.07.2025 16:13 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah, that dimension of it seems very cool

29.07.2025 15:45 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I can't help but be a bit intrigued by these (why? I've no real idea. Generic tech fetishsim?) But the whole "camera on the face" thing still feels like a serious barrier. There's an anti-social element to it too, no?

Navneet Alang: It can kill you or make you feel more alive. How do you decide whether alcohol is worth it? Dry or wet, a martini can burn you in more ways than one.

For the Toronto Star this weekend, I wrote about the calculus of the martini - how much is each one worth when we know each one brings you closer to your demise?
