7. I would have given anything to have had access to the Hepatitis B vaccine as a child. The idea that we may be about to take this protection away from future generations of American children is unfathomable to me. This poorly thought-out recommendation must be reversed.

6. If the vaccine had existed when I was a newborn infant and had been administered to me according to the current CDC guidelines, which state that the first dose of Hepatitis B vaccine should be administered “within 24 hours of birth if medically stable,” I would have avoided needless suffering.

5. I had a high fever and was delirious for days, and it terrified my parents. I still shudder to think about this gaping hole in the memory of my childhood, and how bad things must have been for me to have blocked out the experience entirely.

4. I remember the emergency room visit where I received the contaminated dose of Hemofil. I do not remember anything that followed. I nearly died.

3. I contracted Hepatitis B from a contaminated infusion of antihemophilic factor concentrate on September 23, 1978, exactly 47 years ago today. The Hepatitis B vaccine wasn’t released until 1981, so in 1978 there was no opportunity for me to have been vaccinated.

2. I’d like to push back on that, for the simple reason that I was infected with Hepatitis B in 1978, when I was THREE YEARS OLD.

I wish the opera community would listen and learn about navigating a performance career while *also* contending with the logistical and physical burdens of navigating disability, never mind the ableism that greets you at every step.

A bad director’s interference detracts from an actor’s performance. A good director shows an actor the dimensions of the sandbox and lets them play. A great director anchors and supports an actor, coaxing out a performance better than that actor knew was in them. Ella is a GREAT director. Hire her.
