Great Books education in service of this kind of ideology defeats the whole open inquiry it claims to represent. But very tempting to put it on display in an environment where it’s clear certain ideas wouldn’t go over well even being teased out.

The distinction I draw between urban and rural Midwest (with the monasteries providing an interesting wrinkle) get at why this approach was immediately contested.

Andrew Greeley's memoir (which turned me on to Cardinal Meyer) is a great read on this.

The point here isn't so much about ideology as about regional specificity. Between the influence of the monasteries and the different ethnic mix you ended up with a less claustrophobic ecclesial atmosphere that left more room for new approaches (related to why Liturgical Movement thrived there).

Cardinal Meyer was archbishop of Milwaukee before he was in Chicago (succeeding Cardinal Stritch who had the same trajectory).

As a brutalism proponent & Catholic of Midwest origin (which is to say I was received in Milwaukee), I love this
