Yeah it wasnt the short term naming, it was because it would have meant a complete rewriting and reprogramming of multiple rail systems because of the name/location code change. Thousands of pieces of equipment would have had to be manually, physically renamed too.

Fare evasion isn’t good but it is a distraction from the real problem. Transit agencies can’t & shouldn’t rely heavily on fares for their operating expenses. State & local governments need to find new, stable, ample sources of revenue. Transit is a public good. It’s time to treat it like one.
