India eases sulphur emission rules for coal power plants, reversing decade-old mandate India eases clean-air equipment mandate for coal-fired power plants, exempting majority from sulphur emission rules.

Exempting thermal power plant compliance risks millions of lives and ignores science

Despite being mandated in 2015, 92% of #coal plants in India still lack #FGDs to cut #SO2 emissions. Now studies by NEERI, NIAS & IIT Delhi are cited to weaken SOโ‚‚ norms. we have compiled a note outlining the common arguments along with scientific responses that counter them.

Despite ongoing debate over the need for FGDs in India, the scientific evidence is clear: enforcing SOโ‚‚ norms in coal power plants (CPP) is non-negotiable. Power sector drives up to 12% of PM2.5 and transboundary impact is 16% in urban areas. Only 8% CPP have FGDs and 380 of 537 CPP exceed limits.

Yes, coal continued to play a key role in meeting growing demand, though the higher growth in renewables is a positive trend to watch
