I was reflecting on all those politicians in the past who used the, it provides jobs, argument to justify all sorts of malfeasance. Since AI, politicians these days don't use the jobs argument much.

That argument always strikes me as ingenuous, as if there are populations existing in a vacuum just waiting for an exploitative industry to come and save them. I need to do more research on this.
