the problem is that it's not about "determination" as such, but "enclosure". "fixing" as it reads is a limiting of *horizons* (environment) phenomenologically.

there are certainly good and admirable things here, to be clear. I think they require running counter to the purported aim of Robinson's project, though, in order to be dignified.

my take would be that, insofar as "hungry listening" exists, it needs to be historicized without making the inference to regional epistemology/ontology

(thus, even immanent to "settler ontology/epistemology," "hungry listening" necessarily fails as a veridical concept. it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, but rather that it's *not* a transcendental condition of "being a settler," which yeah just seems empirically true.)

(Hegelian speculative experience immediately makes the experienced concept of "hungry listening" a contradiction in terms ftr, so as for "unfamiliarity" <=> "uncertainty" to be constitutive of "hungry listening" in that respect.)

in general, I think it's practically bad to naturalize "settlerhood," and if we're gonna crit settlerhood, "nature" is also included in that project

like, the phenomena described exist (see ch. 1), but I think the decolonial move actually weakens the concept by arguing that "Western [concepts of] nature" are ontologically different from "indigenous [concepts of] nature." the *failure* of hungry listening doesn't necc beget *more* hunger!

I think my problem with "hungry listening" is that (Dylan) Robinson's ontological difference is arbitrary when you consider that purportedly "Western ontologies" of music are able to relativize "hungry listening" on its on terms, assuming it's "familiarity" <=> "certainty."

the direct implication of one Robinson thesis is that either indigenous peoples don't "live" (if "to live" is to have affordances), or (in an indigenous "ontology" of music) social functions in music are not affordances, both of which seem unwanted

it's unfortunate I have to call two things "the Robinson thesis," and that both of them are wrong
