To be fair, this analogy seems likely to be misunderstood, since the client of the open protocol is compared to a privately owned product, and the private company is compared to an open protocol.

It's like the effect of two mirrors facing each other: the universes of the Gilmore Girls and the Sopranos are infinitely replicated all the way down.
