On the Miliband £300 reduction on bills promise, this was a daft mistake made in opposition while he thought green pooling to outflank marginal cost of gas was possible without radical decentralization, and even laid it as amendment to Energy Act 2023

FWIW I still think the decision not to go for zonal pricing as way to reduce grid infrastructure need in shorter term was wrong, while understandable.

But what it does do is put stress on need to reduce load on grid by decentralization e.g. so local onshore wind can get sold locally via clever IT in substations, and lowering electricity demand via ground source, insulation, and off course roof top solar.

The key prob with Economist articles like this for interested lay people like me is that, while they make very interesting assertions - in this case the rising cost of grid strengthening costs as % of bills outweighing - they don't give a data source.
