Thinking of nipping to the Railway for an early pint to see the conclusion of the test.

Anybody else? Forgotten the name but there's an ok IPA stilll on, maybe. Think I went in with dogs last week some time.

Ah, this is what Bluesky is for.

Part of it is that the discourse allows people to say 'I'm not a racist, though I hate brown people' via the same kind of intellectually validated ultra-definitionalism that allows what we know in our hearts as genocide to be defined as narrowly-speaking-not-genocide-because.

It is an outrage that this is not already considered the best language joke on the internet ever.

I bet myself that nobody would get this top linguistic jokem but @marwoodlennox.bsky.social proved me wrong, and I am now in awe of them, because I wouldn't have got it.

Struggled up a hill on the 90s steel frame bike earlier, and I now consider myself 0.5% moved on my likely journey towards thinking about maybe investigating potential for maybe getting an e-bike in a while or so for some journeys.

Change comes so quick with bike tech,

Yes, i think we're talking cross each other re: substantive issues vs what might hit home if Reform go into election on this promise', I guess.

Didn't express it well, but my point was that 'oh bugger, I might not be able to go on Easyjet to Barcelona' might be more effective as political message push than 'the NI exec will fall' or even 'some people won't be able to but tomatoes'

@stevepeers.bsky.social disagrees with me that it would actually happen, but even the reasonable threat of planes not taking off two weeks after leaving the EHCR might focus voter minds, and opponents of Reform would be wise to prepar this argument inter alia bsky.app/profile/bick...

Nor me, and I got the same 'working it through' out of it. I still have it on the PC, 10 years on. Not sure AI could have written this intro, not least in that it refers to a minister who might now have advised me to use AI. And yes, there's a bit of grit in my eye, even 10 years on.

Where does the term "luxury beliefs" originate, do you know? I first saw it in Goodwin's book but it's probably not his.

Son Heung-min joins WFP aid appeal as Israel starves Gaza The South Korean captain explicitly addressed the ongoing starvation crisis in the Gaza Strip in the WFP clip, where urged for donations.

I know little about premier league football, but fair play to Son Heung-min for taking time to do a video for the World Food Programme about the genocide by starvation in Gaza (he doesn't call it that).

Though she opens her final chapter by saying the whole book has been about why we get the wrong politicians, and that she has 'led us on' before some final nonsense about being more like the US in separation of powers & giving bursaries to people who want to be MPs. It's not a very good book.

On the Miliband Β£300 reduction on bills promise, this was a daft mistake made in opposition while he thought green pooling to outflank marginal cost of gas was possible without radical decentralization, and even laid it as amendment to Energy Act 2023

03.08.2025 11:32 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

FWIW I still think the decision not to go for zonal pricing as way to reduce grid infrastructure need in shorter term was wrong, while understandable.

03.08.2025 11:32 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

But what it does do is put stress on need to reduce load on grid by decentralization e.g. so local onshore wind can get sold locally via clever IT in substations, and lowering electricity demand via ground source, insulation, and off course roof top solar.

The key prob with Economist articles like this for interested lay people like me is that, while they make very interesting assertions - in this case the rising cost of grid strengthening costs as % of bills outweighing - they don't give a data source.

A good summary of where we are, though it might've been better to conclude not that "politicians will have to change the conversation and explain the real trade-offs to voters", but, more realistically, that "voters will have to change the conversation and explain the real trade-offs to politicians"

Essential maths for transphobes.

When trans people are dangerous toilet predators, they are 0.5% of the population, and everywhere.

When trans people are not a minority whose rights are really worth anything, what with all the other hate, they are 0.05% of the population, so don't count.

Jeremy Corbyn's new party needs a name and it's trickier than you might think The ex-Labour leader wants supporters to come up with a name for his new party.

I'm amused by the idea in this piece that the so-called "Jeremy Corbyn's new party" hasn't got a name because it's deliberate to make it a democratic choice, as opposed to it having been a total cock-up caused by what James Schneider calls "contingent human factors"

Indeed.

Oh, and trans people make up 0.5% of the population when they're supposed to be threatening predators, and 0.05% of the population when they're too insignificant to worry about.

That's the way it works.
