Over the weekend the government consultation on earned settlement crossed my feed thanks to @jdportes.bsky.social and @danielsohege.bsky.social. Filling it out made me very sad. So sad that I've written something far too long (as usual) but if you'd like to read them they're here.

There are also some people who will never be eligible for settlement at all by these proposals.. For example a pensioner or full time carer for a disabled partner who is on a spouse visa.

If they do not work and earn more than £12,570 a year for 3-5 years, then they will NEVER settle. This applies retrospectively to those who do not have 3-5 years left! The fees for renewing are over £3000 for 2.5 years. This will plunge British children into poverty and instability. And for what?

This applies even to spouses of British citizens, who might be disabled, carers, in education, recertifying a profession, parenting at home, relying on a partner's high income, a pensioner, etc.

I worry you may have missed a critical change hiding in this document - your section about the economically inactive was wonderful and compassionate, but did not mention the mandatory contribution requirement.

I made a website in 2013 after being detained at a US land border for hours without any recourse. I was in a tiny cell, with one toilet in a separate space where up to four guards could watch me use it. I was released a few hours later, without any additional information, but I didn't need any.

I hope everyone feels reinvigorated after visiting GDC & I hope for next year you make the fact that so many can't afford, can't safely go, or otherwise are blocked from the feelings & support you're now feeling a consideration in supporting one of the most exclusionary events in games next year.
