What are the prospects for the Tusk government? The right-wing opposition candidate’s presidential election victory has radically changed Poland’s political dynamics, scuppering the liberal-centrist coalition government’s plans to re-set its reform agenda. However, there is no immediate prospect of a change of prime minister or government and the coalition is likely to survive until the next election, albeit considerably weakened and divided. Presidential election is a huge blow…

What is at stake in Poland’s presidential election? A victory for the liberal-centrist ruling party’s candidate will remove the last obstacle to implementation of the government’s institutional reform and elite replacement project. If the right-wing opposition candidate wins the government faces continued resistance from the President and will become more unstable, but an early parliamentary election is unlikely. A critical election On June 1st, Poland holds a presidential election run-off between Rafał Trzaskowski - Warsaw mayor and deputy leader of the liberal-centrist Civic Platform (PO), Poland’s main governing party - and Karol Nawrocki, head of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) historical research institute who is supported by the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) grouping, the ruling party between 2015-23.

Who will win Poland’s crucial presidential election? An emotionally-charged apartment scandal has stymied the campaign momentum of the right-wing opposition presidential challenger to the liberal-centrist ruling party’s candidate, who remains the favourite to win. But the election outcome is likely to depend on the extent to which it becomes a referendum on an unpopular government, and how the third placed candidate’s votes transfer. A crucial election On May 18th Poland will hold a presidential election, with a second round run-off a fortnight later between the top two candidates if none secures more than 50%.

How will international politics affect Poland’s presidential election? The uncertain geopolitical situation means that international issues could play a significant role in Poland’s crucial summer presidential election, although the extent depends on a news cycle out of the candidates’ control. It could help the liberal-centrist ruling party’s candidate by overshadowing the government’s unpopularity and producing a pro-incumbent ‘rally effect’, although his support for a stronger EU defence identity is risky given most Poles still see the USA as Poland’s only credible military security guarantor.

Can the radical right candidate win Poland’s presidential election? A radical right free-market third party challenger has transformed a presidential election that most commentators assumed would be a two-horse race. Without a government record to defend he has challenged the duopoly that has dominated Polish politics but may have peaked too soon and his support is drawn disproportionately from younger Poles, a fickle demographic who are the least likely to turn out and vote.

Will the ruling party’s candidate lose the Polish presidential election? The liberal-centrist ruling party candidate’s poll lead is slipping and he could be in trouble if the summer presidential election turns into a plebiscite on the government. But he remains the clear favourite and his right-wing opponent has yet to channel these anti-incumbent sentiments effectively. A crucial election In December 2023, a coalition government led by Donald Tusk, who had served as Polish prime minister between 2007-14, was sworn in ending the eight-year rule of the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party.

Why are Poles so disappointed with the Tusk government? Most Poles feel that the governing coalition has failed to deliver key reforms and lacks a policy agenda beyond holding its predecessor to account for alleged abuses of power. This could be a problem for the liberal-centrist ruling party’s candidate in the crucial summer presidential election if it turns into a plebiscite on the incumbent government. More opponents than supporters…
