MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Alberto Castañeda Mondragón says his memory was so jumbled after a beating by immigration officers that he initially could not remember he had a daughter and still struggles to recall treasured moments like the night he taught her to dance.

But the violence he endured last month in Minnesota while being detained is seared into his battered brain.

He remembers Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulling him from a friend’s car on Jan. 8 outside a St. Paul shopping center and throwing him to the ground, handcuffing him, then punching him and striking his head with a steel baton. He remembers being dragged into an SUV and taken to a detention facility, where he said he was beaten again.

He also remembers the emergency room and the intense pain from eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages.

ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.”

What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.

This giant ICE Army they are building this year is also likely to be at polling places during the midterms in heavily Democratic precincts with the excuse being that they are looking for “illegals trying to vote.”

Wake up. Make breakfast. Do email. Watch a murder. Go to a party for a 5 year old. Laugh with my daughter. See a different angle of that murder. Hear govt officials slander the victim. Play Barbies with my kid. Feed her dinner. Tear up at that victim reading last honors to a vet. Put kid to bed. USA

The people who spent years defending and even lionizing Kyle Rittenhouse and Ashli Babbitt now want us to believe that an unarmed mother in her car and a disarmed nurse were domestic terrorists who deserved to be murdered by law enforcement.

Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.
Make sure some of them wind through the dark end of the forest.
Make sure they lead to the haunted cottage of the twig witch, and past the dens of creatures born of moss and dark mischief.

You're seeing America kamikaze itself into a brick wall.

It didn't have to be this way.

But greed and racism, our two sins, will be our downfall.

Too many people still with their hands in the sand.

The NBA and WNBA are now actively posting on Bluesky and I can't emphasize enough how important it is that we do everything possible to support these accounts, because how many followers they acquire and how much positive engagement they get will 100%, unequivocally determine how committed they are to this place AND how likely it is that other leagues & sports personalities could then come here too. These accounts aren't just big accounts, they're bridges to entire communities and the ripple effect of them succeeding here would be MASSIVE. If you want to stick a stake through Twitter's heart, this is how you do it - but remember, the NBA and WNBA don't *have* to be here and it's not a foregone conclusion this isn't anything more than a trial run. So yes, don't just follow these accounts: help promote them and positively interact w them too. Let's show them this place is worth investing in.

Trump accused of ‘mocking’ Catholics after posting image of himself as pope US president displays ‘pathological megalomania’ as cardinals gather to elect new leader after death of Pope Francis Donald Trump has been accused of mocking the election of a new leader of the Catholic church after posting an AI-generated picture of himself as the pope on social media. The image, shared on Friday night on Trump’s Truth Social site and the White House’s official X account, raised eyebrows at the Vatican, which is still in the period of nine days of official mourning after Pope Francis’s funeral on 26 April. Why China has the upper hand in its trade war with America A truce is still possible, but no one wants to be first to pick up the phone

Why China has the upper hand in its trade war with America:

America accounts for much less than a fifth of global trade. China, on the other hand, is the biggest trading partner for over a hundred countries and it hopes to pick up some of the international goodwill destroyed by Trump.

Advocates celebrate court-ordered pause on Toronto bike lane removals An Ontario judge paused the Ford government’s plan to rip out three of Toronto’s major protected bike lanes, handing cycling advocates a symbolic victory.

“We’ve always argued that ripping out bike lanes won’t solve congestion, and the judge’s comments reflect that,” said Michael Longfield, executive director of Cycle Toronto.
