There was essentially zero coverage of the disabled protest to stop Medicaid cuts. Capitol police dragged protesters out, many in wheelchairs, and arrested 34 people. It was barely a blip on the news because nobody really cares about the disabled.

What was once intended as a word to describe a freer government model with the methodology of enacting the popular will, whether it be in the form of a direct democracy wherein the majority may enact their will on the minority, the representative democracy—i.e., a republic—wherein groups of people selected by demographics such as ethnicity, wage, or land may elect a representative to vote in their place in the interests of greater policies so that they can more freely participate in their day-to-day activities, or a mixed democracy wherein both methods exist in different strata of government and a public forum remains for the vox populi open to collectively suggest bills to later be voted on as law or vetoed into oblivion, has in the modern era—and even the era before us—instead been warped into a word to reinforce the evangelizing of imperialism; in essence, it has been deprived of its intended meaning to instead be synonymous with colonialism, and therefore, oppression.

However, you've probably noticed by now that this isn't what the app's detractors generally focus on: to be blunt, it has become more socially acceptable to espouse sinophobia (anti-Asian racism, generally against Chinese people) than address corporate manipulation. You may have even ingrained some sinophobic terms into your own speech: For instance, "Chinesium," being used to describe poor-quality products, inherently blaming their quality on their production in China rather than planned obsolescence, the social preference to refer to China as "the CCP," or, "Chinese Communist Party," merging together sinophobia and anti-Communism to create fear of Asian Communism (and particularly Chinese Communism, the flavour of Asian Communism most people are familiar with), while refraining from using similar language to describe anti-Communist nations (for instance, referring to the UK as The Windsor Empire, or referring to the USA as The American Empire). This sinophobia and anti-Communism drastically culturally overshadows the actual insidious psychological manipulation that ByteDance performed (and was swiftly replicated by every social media under the sun without comment). What of the surveillance, however, you may ask? Fortunately, I've already seen analysis of this in Socialist spaces: that it is widely recognized that the average neoliberal is more concerned with Chinese surveillance than the surveillance of corporations (for instance, Facebook, Google, Amazon) or Imperial governments (for instance, the American Empire, the UK, or Canada).

Been making a point of going out and *reading* shit lately. I know that sounds silly, but JP Hill is who I've started with. I've made it a point to read one of his pieces every morning and it's the first time I've regularly engaged with this sort of thing.
