First pass at the Adrix & Nev secret Arwen/Walls of Ba Sing Se deck. I’ve had a lot of fun with Arwen as a mono green deck, but now I really want to try and run out of dice.

I know some folks are iffy about mixing their Universes Beyond but these two are k-i-s-s-i-n-g.

My first stop will be Doubling Season and Hornet Queen. Queen enters as a 2/2 with 60 +1/+1 counters and makes eight 1/1 insects with 60 +1/+1 counters. 550 power with flying and deathtouch. Second step will be either Koma.

So we Elvish Piper to get The Walls of Ba Sing Se for one mana, then Exchange of Words to switch The Walls’ text box with Arwen, Weaver of Hope. Now Walls is indestructible, and every creature we ETB gets 30 +1/+1 counters. Time to do degenerate Simic tokens counters stuff.

I think this single card spoiled yesterday has already prompted more deck brewing thoughts for me than the entire Spider-Man set.

My mono green Arwen counters deck is about to become a Simic deck (either with Jackal as the Commander, or Adrix and Nev). All I wanna do is cast a Hornet Queen that makes a bunch of 31/31 flying deathtouch insects.

I don’t play cEDH (I build weird B3 decks and spend too much money on foils) but I watch cEDH content. The metagame is fascinating — it rewires your card evaluation mindset, and what makes a card “good” depends on anticipating your opponents’ moves. Casual could learn from this.

1-mana artifacts I have tutored for multiple times recently. Not a Sol Ring in sight, and no regrets.

It is *wild* how much the Avatar previews feel like cool Magic cards I want to put in decks or build around and the Spider-Man set felt like “yep, here is Spider-Man.”

With TMNT on the distant horizon, I feel it’s my duty to point out only one card in Magic’s history has “pizza” in the name, it’s from Unknown Event, and it’s not lore accurate bc no way our boys in green are ordering deep dish in the city.

Yeah, it’s never a good feeling when new cards put niche strategies *too* on rails. I used to have a Crisis the Purger deck with a Curse theme, and then they printed the “I am the absolute best Curse Commander" and I lost interest. A fine line between needed support and obliterating creativity.

True. If it was a one-drop I’d windmill slam. Two-drops gotta earn their keep in this deck (Bloom Tender, Goblin Recruiter to find Zada, Krark) but I think the Cub is good enough to bump Metastatic Evangel out of the deck.

Flavor Saver Text

Trying to decide if this adorable little guy is good enough to throw in Tazri Zada. Floor is 1G to make two Zada targets (Cub and the animated land) which isn’t bad, but I’m already running six 0-drop creatures. Ceiling is that plus an extra mana for five potential dorks.

They should’ve saved the face card treatment for Krang in the TMNT Magic set.

It pains me that the card treatment is how it is, because the artwork is typically stunning, at least on the Marvel ones (that Ponder is Mœbius, one of my favorite illustrators). But the rules text is so lackluster. It’s even worse on the Avatar ones since the actual artwork is so simply stylized.

I thought the Marvel Universe treatment was the worst a Magic card has ever looked, but somehow the Avatar ones are worse? The graphic designer in me weeps.
