While it has its limitations, I believe it offers a strong framework for TIL analysisโ€”both microscopically by pathologists and computationallyโ€”with excellent interpretability. As a bonus, we incorporated a StarDist model trained specifically for IHC slides, designed to run seamlessly in QuPath.

On a personal note, this project holds a special place in my life. It shaped the foundation of my expertise in immuno-microenvironment, image analysis, computational pathology, and the development of AI-based tools.

The robust accuracy of our computational analysis for immune cell quantification and immune-phenotyping underscores the potential of computational pathology in another tumour type for immune microenvironment analysis.

We demonstrated its applicability and relevance not only in resection samples but also in needle biopsies. Recognising that computational pathology is the future, we developed an AI-based image analysis model capable of analysing slide images and delivering highly interpretable results.
