This graph says it all: instead of starting to go down, the *annual increase* of atmospheric CO2 is setting new records. We're making climate change worse at a record rate.
Turning this around should be our top priority, and it's not.

I have a PhD position available in my lab at the University of Freiburg!! If you, or someone you know, might be looking for a position using modeling and simulations to uncover secrets in (glyco-)protein structure/function relationships please take a look at our website!

Is academic research becoming too competitive? Nature examines the data Applications for European research grants increased in 2025. Scientists say theyโ€™re feeling the competition.

Success rates for Europeโ€™s leading research grants are declining as a surge in applications far outweighs the funds available

Dear European colleagues, I strongly advise you to forcefully repudiate this initiative before they end up in a position to influence policy. Let me know if I can help.

Yikes! In this paper the AlphaFold model of human plasminogen (PDB-8uq6) has been refined into noise (EMD-42462) using Phenix & ISOLDE. For some reason the authors even interpret side-chain interactions:

The recent trajectory, in broad strokes:

- Regime starts militarizing the conflict in early summer
- Regime declares all liberal/leftwing political activity as domestic terrorist or terrorism-adjacent in presidential memo
- Regime ramps up the propaganda against โ€œthe Leftโ€ across all channels

Feudalism Is Our Future What the next Dark Ages could look like

An insightful read. I hadnโ€™t appreciated the links between feudalism and privatization. The authorโ€™s evocation of how future historians may look back on our era in that respect felt important, and a fruitful way to think, to me. Iโ€™m hopeful the pendulum will swing back towards effective government.

One week from now I plan to be out marching against the idiotic criminals running our government. I'm not "getting paid" and I'm not part of any "Pro-Hamas" group. I'm just mad as hell.

I will not be punching any police officers, nor setting fires, nor breaking any glass. Why will I turn out? (1/2)

possibly stupid question - does anyone in #teamtomo or #cryoem recognize these little stacks (from EMPIAR-12549, U2OS cell lamellae)? The green circle is 300ร…, and the spacing between the layers is ~50ร…. The fourth, bell-shaped thing is something else, also not sure of that one..

From descriptive to quantitative biocatalysis - Nature Catalysis The 1913 study โ€˜Die Kinetik der Invertinwirkungโ€™, by Michaelis and Menten, marked a pivotal advancement in enzymology by illustrating the application of mechanistic models and quantitative kinetics to biocatalysis. The foundational framework described back then continues to have a strong impact on enzymology, with profound influences that range from undergraduate education to structureโ€“function studies and the format and content of contemporary kinetic databases.

Science is political and "not wanting to see politics" as a scientist is a political choice. You may decide it's what works for you, but you need to decide how that fits with the fact your (diverse) colleagues still exist ๐Ÿงช

Human metapneumovirus: understanding the molecular mechanisms and pathology of infection | Journal of Virology Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) was first identified in 2001 by researchers who analyzed samples from 28 patients suffering from respiratory tract illnesses (1). Since its identification, HMPV has been found to be globally prevalent (2, 3), with most individuals experiencing their first infection by the age of 5 years (4). Despite being discovered in 2001, serological studies with sera collected in 1958 demonstrated that HMPV had been circulating since the 1950s (1). Later on, phylogenetic analysis suggested that HMPV evolved from avian metapneumovirus after a zoonotic event at least 200 years ago (5, 6).

A really great and comprehensive resource on metapneumovirus from the labs of Becky Dutch and Bernadette van den Hoogen.
