Generating dermatopathology reports from gigapixel whole slide images with HistoGPT | Nature Communications Histopathology is the reference standard for diagnosing the presence and nature of many diseases, including cancer. However, analyzing tissue samples under a microscope and summarizing the findings in a comprehensive pathology report is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and non-standardized. To address this problem, we present HistoGPT, a vision language model that generates pathology reports from a patient’s multiple full-resolution histology images. It is trained on 15,129 whole slide images from 6705 dermatology patients with corresponding pathology reports. The generated reports match the quality of human-written reports for common and homogeneous malignancies, as confirmed by natural language processing metrics and domain expert analysis. We evaluate HistoGPT in an international, multi-center clinical study and show that it can accurately predict tumor subtypes, tumor thickness, and tumor margins in a zero-shot fashion. This is even worse than I imagined. I’d imagined these were being handed out by a flawed algorithm. Somehow it instead being an inexperienced couple with no knowledge or regard for the topics makes it even more sinister.

If a foreign adversary snuck into our Federal budget and cut science research and education the way we’re cutting it ourselves — strategically undermining America’s long-term health, wealth, and security — we would likely consider it an act of war.

I would wager that most university systems generate money far in excess of what they receive from federal funding and tuition.

They are massive economic engines for local and national economies, employ collectively hundreds of thousands of people across the country, and generate new economies.

Not to state the obvious, but none of them were sent to a terrorist prison in El Salvador. They all had lawyers, indictment by grand jury, a trial or a guilty plea where a judge ensured it was knowing & voluntary & access to an appeals process. In other words, all the hallmarks of due process.

Not just propaganda. They are canceling grants of all types, based on the thinnest of excuses for why they are not consistent with agency priorities. At least 8 now in our division- so far. This is cold blooded murder of the US scientific enterprise.

I read this editorial in Science magazine today. It is focused on science in Latin America and how political decisions have scuttled progress. It struck me as being eerily similar to what is currently happening at the NIH in the U.S.
