I have written too much this week, but over at JOBS THAT WORK, I shared some insider-ish thoughts on that Trump grants executive order. There’s more going on here than it appears, and it’s not great for this WH they’re at this place six months in.

I’m not someone who acts like fictional characters are real people and has that kind of overriding projection and connection.

Still, Data hooked up with the Borg Queen and my reaction was “Good for that guy, he’s been through a lot.”

The beginning of it is one of the grossest things I have ever seen in an EO. On the other hand, telling your staff to do the basics of their jobs—which they supposedly spent four years plotting to do—ALSO is a thing I’ve never seen in an EO.

Well yeah. But the “I’m telling you to have people pay attention to grants stuff” is day one actions. And it explains grants that barely scrubbed “President Biden” off of them that the admin has put out. One of which preserved text I think I wrote a year ago.

Are those things weird and gross? Yeah, but I think they’re covering here. There’s a lot of day one stuff that—having minded a portfolio of grants over a couple cycles—I’m shocked to see in an EXECUTIVE ORDER issued 200 days in.

Yes, there’s the LGBTQ stuff and grants caused Covid etc etc etc stuff to distract the conversation. This is the third or fourth time the admin had said they don’t know how the money works. Which is interesting.

Here’s the thing: this is stuff most administrations do on day one—put someone in charge of money, review the grant solicitations to make sure you’re funding projects you like, and pay attention to awards decisions.

This is the administration basically saying it isn’t good at grants.

“How do I convey in my newsletter how intentions matter in no-college/skills-first hiring and that’s probably going to make the Trump Administration’s efforts to effect it really doomed?”

[Big honkin Trump noise]

The other problem here is Lewis doesn’t know his audience. As in he has no clue who his audience is. In the article above, he’s pitching Fox viewers. A few months earlier, he’s literally pitching Semafor DURING AN INTERVIEW and has to be reigned in.

I’m being ridiculous, but I don’t know if an industry where the employees know so much more about how to do business than the business people at the top. The problem is not pitching Fox viewers, it’s not knowing your brand and how to build and monetize it by doing it really well.

Will Lewis really is every bad Gannett executive rolled up into one.

If I was teaching rasslin, I’d use Toni as an example of how to build and rebuild someone. This is really art.

Another reason the college sports order could have more teeth. The other side of this is that schools may fight harder to preserve revenue they have, but only a small number of schools really make money on athletics.
