the proteasome still holds secrets – amazing new study shows how midnolin drives ubiquitin-independent degradation, repurposing proteasomal Rpn11 to act as a receptor not a deubiquitinase, while PSMD2 anchors midnolin via its NLS motif. wow. congrats to all authors.

Keiji Tanaka (1949–2024) Keiji Tanaka, a beloved scientist and a pioneering leader in the field of intracellular protein degradation, passed away unexpectedly from ischemic heart disease on July 23, 2024 at the age of 75. His unparalleled dedication to proteasome research has left an indelible legacy; without his contributions, the field would scarcely be where it is today. His untimely departure marks a profound loss to life sciences and will be deeply mourned by colleagues and researchers worldwide.

CRL3ARMC5 ubiquitin ligase and Integrator phosphatase form parallel mechanisms to control early stages of RNA Pol II transcription Cacioppo, Gillis, Shlamovitz, Zeller, etΒ al. show that CRL3ARMC5 ubiquitylates RNA Pol II at early stages of transcription as part of a major homeostatic RNA Pol II turnover mechanism. CRL3ARMC5 and the Integrator phosphatase act as complementary pathways, monitoring the quantity and quality of RNA Pol II complexes before they are licensed into elongation.

The first paper from our lab is online! A wonderful collaboration with @scottbscience.bsky.social lab. We discover that Pol II is extensively regulated by Ubiquitin at the beginning of the transcription cycle!

Could't think of a better inaugural post here. Very excited to share that our manuscript on the "Discovery and mechanism of K63-linkage-directed deubiquitinase activity in USP53" was published today at Nature Chemical Biology. M1-linked Ubiquitination by LUBAC Regulates AMPK Activity and the Response to Energetic Stress Methionine-1 (M1)-linked ubiquitin chains, assembled by the ubiquitin ligase LUBAC and cleaved by the deubiquitinase OTULIN, are critical regulators of inflammation and immune homeostasis. Genetic los...

Excited to share this work led by @CamillaElb from my lab where we identified an entirely new role of LUBAC as a critical regulator of AMPK, the energetic stress response, and the regulation of cellular metabolism. If you are interested in #ubiquitin and #metabolism, have a read:
