If you think a just-fertilized ovary is entitled to life but are indifferent to what happens to a kidnapped 4-year-old with cancer, sent to a dangerous country without meds, you don’t give a fuck about the lives of children. You are just in a cult that fetishizes being against abortions.

Van Hollen: "Can you imagine FDR in the middle of WW2 saying to Churchill, 'you know, we're not going to continue to help you until you turn over half of your coal and mineral reserves.' That's not how you behave when you want to support a friend who's under attack by an authoritarian like Putin."

Mike Pence just reposted an old article he wrote about the limitations on the powers of a president. For some reason. Here is a part of it.

On Ukraine, Europe must step into the void | Virgin

Europe can’t rely on the strength of the transatlantic relationship to help contain Russia’s threat – it must lead from the front and be the true force of support that Ukraine needs. Not just for Ukraine’s sake, but for a free and sovereign Europe.

Appeasement at Munich World Wars, Past and Possible

"Appeasement at Munich: World Wars, Past and Possible"
The symmetry between Germany-Czechoslovakia in 1938 and Russia-Ukraine in 2022 is uncanny, and pausing for a moment on the resemblances might help us to take a broader view of today.

The difficulty was we were always battling to get people to accept hypotheticals the other side waved away saying they’ll never happen. Ten years on and people are now poorer because of brexit, living in a more dangerous world with nation state war in Europe and old alliances ending. Different case.

Also; there’s a strong change putin does invade say, Estonia, and if so, that + the madness engulfing the USA, with the right political handling (*big* if!) there will be a strong case to be made that the UK needs closer ties somewhere. As the person who did press for lab’s eu campaign,

I’m with you on almost all but this. There isn’t enough widespread political support for brexit still to give reform the popular support in enough constituencies to win. They *might* increase their seats, but if labour undo it quickly and get growth and people feel better off they won’t care by 2029

At this point I genuinely don't think it's hyperbole to say that Elon Musk is functionally in charge of the US government. Perhaps not in specific policy areas - two bills or one on the hill, policy in the mideast. But certainly functional control of the state apparatus.

Starmer summons UK defence chiefs in tussle over spending Trump is pushing European governments to commit much higher funding to armed forces

Labour should be using the need to increase defence spending as a off-ramp for their promises on tax, not letting their defence policy (like everything else) be constrained by their promises on tax.

It’s also a nightmare for gov that it’s been granted in the Lords. Less media profile for sure, but the level of expertise and knowledge will mean the easy political rhetoric the gov would have used in the commons to defend this simply won’t wash. Suspect they’ll get a good booting from peers

Urgh. Self inflicted u-turn coming. Not in answer to this obviously - the gov will double down today and force the lords spokex to take flak from learned experts on why this is in breach of law, act ignorant and say it’s not, to only then uturn this once it gets successfully challenged in court.

Pfizer’s cancer drug commercial was beautiful, but their breast cancer drug Ibrance costs $10k per month and their prostate cancer drug Xtandi costs $22k per month.

Beautiful commercials don’t change the fact that 42% of cancer patients exhaust their life savings in 2 years.
