He kept digging and flinging as if somehow that might bring Emily back. Finally, the Rabbi touched his shoulder, not to stop him, not at first but to witness the storm, letting it burn through. Only when Rei’s arms began to tremble did he say softly, “Rei, that’s enough.”

Rei got up. Walked over to the shovel. He turned it upside down as was the tradition. He lifted as much dirt as he could & flung it into the grave. Staring down at the casket, he became a little unhinged. He turned the shovel right side up & dumped in another huge load.

Together, brother and sister blew out the candles. Everyone cheered. Suddenly, a loud clap of thunder shook the house masking the muted roar of the blowing wind. Little Stevie screamed. “It’s alright, Stevie,” Ruth said. “Our house is armored. Everything will be fine.”

Rei loved his sister but she's very sickly. When he opened his eyes again, instead of blowing out the candles, he moved the cake closer to Emily. “Come on Em, help me blow out the candles," he said. Emily leaned forward and took a big gulp of air as Rei offered, “One... two… three… blow!”

Ruth placed the cake on the center of the table & led the group in a rousing round of “Happy Birthday.” When they were done, Ruth pushed the cake closer to Rei and said, “OK, Rei. Make a wish, then blow out the candles.” Rei closed his eyes & made an elaborate wish.
