Semafor: Guinea worm neared global eradication, with just 10 cases reported worldwide in 2025, all of them in Chad, Ethiopia, or South Sudan. When former US President Jimmy Carter founded an eradication program in the mid-1980s, there were millions of infections in developing countries and the only human disease that had ever previously been permanently defeated was smallpox. The parasitic infection, transmitted via contaminated water, leads to three-foot worms emerging from painful leg ulcers, and causes long-term incapacitation and disability. While Carter did not, as he hoped, outlive the last Guinea worm (he died in 2024), he may have come close; the 10 cases mark a 33% decrease year-on-year.

Only 10 cases of Guinea worm disease were recorded *globally* last year.

It may become the second human disease we eradicate, after smallpox.

Actually that too! All bugs are very pretty if you get up close to them! They have a variety of patterns and colors and physical formations that are so wonderful to look at!

I like watching them interact with the environment around me because it let's me learn about my environment in a new way. Adjacent (because they're not insects) but spiders too because they make such beautiful art and I get to see that sparkling in the morning dew sometimes.

No this is great! I haven't read either you mentioned. I've read most of the legal and business analysis of the enron scandal but a lot of that avoids the culture that allowed them to rise and instead attributes it to more of a one off of bad people.

I don't know how to narrow my scope onto a focus to engage with whatever it is I'm starting to form.

So I have pieces: enron, the stock market, billionaires, SOX, racism, misogyny, etc but they're all so broad I'm not sure where to start or how to exactly connect them. I can feel something there cause I read a lot and I can like just feel like the edges of an idea.

So I want to tease out the root of what's making all these business leaders so antithetical to what I'd say is our species greatest strength: community.

We applied legislation to help curb business' worst tendencies without addressing the root of it. There's striking similarity between the personalities of enron's leaders and other business leaders we'd call corrupt today. Like the snippets of epstein letters I've seen are similar to enron memos.

So my special interest is Enron and all that that entailed. In many ways SOX helped curtail some significant issues in C level corruption. However the culture that engendered the rot at the top of enron seems to never have really been...solved? I guess?

I know the basics of research but I don't know how to start if I don't have a thesis (cause they never taught that lol so I don't have the skill)

Throwing this out cause I need help lol: how do you do research when you don't know your specific topic. I have a nebulous idea of something I want to look in to but I have no clue how to. Do that. I tried YouTube/HowTo, but the stuff I could find presumes i know my thesis.
