And of course there were a couple residents on the street who insisted that speed humps were causing damage to vehicles, impeding fire trucks, dangerous, etc. Their claims were obviously bullshit, but I never understood why they fought so hard against the idea.

Some years back we tried to get them installed on our residential street in Toronto (which has a speeding problem) The city made it so onerous that we ended up not qualifying after months of effort. So now I sit on my porch yelling at speeding drivers like a crazy person.
