If the second book is 10% as good as the first, it'll be great. Bea Wolf is something special.

Sort of a geologist.

18.08.2025 13:50 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I've listened to a couple books defending nationalism and the arguments seem really weak and the thinking pretty sloppy.
Both cite a lot of people making arguments for the open, liberal societ, but I feel like they didn't understand the reading. It has been an interesting, if frustrating exercise.
Tonight I remembered that a student in a petrology lab I taught described biotite under the microscope as "bookish".
The idea of those mafic minerals getting really into a good novel delights me.
this is so wonderfully weird, give her all the golds π₯

To reduce pedestrian fatalities, we should replace speed limits with momentum limits.
Want to drive your huge electric SUV? Hope you don't mind going 15 mph. Want to get somewhere fast? Better take a Smart Car.
I'm glad that all my worst mistakes aren't televised.

Wait, I'm hearing that everyone did. Everyone except the president. yike, indeed.
Some of the parents at my kid's school have turned the parent org into an actual non-profit, which seems like overkill. Emails from this parent org now come with this disclaimer. I don't think yelling at parents (at the start *and* end of emails!!) gives the welcoming vibe they're going for.

On the one hand, ugh! On the other, it's nice to see that policies have consequences.
But mostly, ugh! I don't want to pay more for literally everything.
Cutlery Corner at the University Mall in Orem, UT had one. They also had Rambo knives which, of course, was a big draw for my 10 year old self.
14.08.2025 00:51 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Act normal. Surely politics will get back to some degree of sanity in another election cycle or two.
12.08.2025 21:53 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is either a terrible headline, a terrible subject for a story, or both. OF COURSE you shouldn't hire a person who is skeptical of an organizations mission to lead that organization. Someone who believes in the mission but has new ideas? Sure, but a skeptic? No way; that's just dumb.
12.08.2025 20:05 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That sounds like a French name, so I think it's unlikely that those arguments will carry much weight with the guys at the top of this administration.
12.08.2025 19:49 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I also think there's a distinction between the "capital" expense you'd pay for a robot vs. the "operational" expense you'd pay for a person to do your work. The price of a domestic servant robot will likely be harder to save up for (or finance) than hiring a person to come over a few times a month.
12.08.2025 16:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'm not sure that I'd ever pay for a laundry robot. Yes, folding clothes is annoying and it'd be nice not to have to, but I don't need another appliance. I already have too much stuff!
Even if it could do all housework, I'm not sure I'd *pay* when I can do it (less than I should) for free.
I am bummed that a model I made is less optimistic than the old model. This is despite the fact that the whole reason I made this new model is because I thought the old model was too optimistic.
Between this and the air conditioner crapping out, today has been very Monday.

11.08.2025 20:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I just ran across this 1970's movie reel showing the tungsten operations at the mine. I think it was produced by the mining company Union Carbide Corp.

A. Simplified geologic map of the Morgan Creek pluton with locations of samples analyzed for modal mineralogy and/or geochemistry by rock type. B. Simplified geologic map of the Morgan Creek pluton showing magnetic susceptibility stations. Magnetic susceptibility values less than 5 x 10-3 SI units, in purple, are anomalously low and are discussed later in the text (map outline modified from Cray, 1981).
Transmitted PPL photomicrograph of sample MC-48, from the southeastern contact of the pluton with the Pine Creek pendant. Chlorite and secondary biotite represent hydrothermal alteration. The weak, brown iron oxide staining along some fractures is interpreted to be related to the removal of magnetite in the zone of low magnetic susceptibility.
One interesting thing about the MC pluton is that rocks in the SE corner lost all magnetic signature, probably from hydrothermal activity related(?) to mineralization in the Pine Creek skarn. In hand sample the rocks look pretty fresh, but there is evidence of replacement and(?) addition of biotite

Live television can be crazy. I'm waiting for my kid to get ready for the day and listening to CSPAN's call in show. The question: who has the upper hand btwn Trump & Putin?
First caller: Putin because of the pee tape
Second caller: why is a Jew running a Christian country like Ukraine.
