They sleep better at night. Knowing our government is finally having someone look at it [the government]." This statement raises some serious questions for me that the reporter should have asked him to clarify: Is this ignorance, arrogance, reckless rhetoric, or a calculated attempt to divide and "other" anyone who isn’t Republican? Is Schenkel too blind to see how Trump’s policies are hurting his own community, does he care about his neighbors? Or is he fully complicit in pushing this rhetoric? Is he pushing this narrative because he believes it, because it serves him, or because he thinks no one will question it? All of the above? And if this was just a “poor choice of words,” why does it sound exactly like what he meant? And most importantly—shouldn’t we expect better from people in leadership?
