This is one of the reasons why I didn’t like Purpose much as as everyone else. Felt like BJ-J is too good of a writer to rely on that! (TBH my main problem with Purpose was just that it was the worse of the two BJ-J plays this year. Justice for Give Me Carmelita Tropicana!)

If I see one more play where the actors keep interrupting the action to explain the play’s subtext and themes to the audience, I am going to scream. You’re supposed to write that in as part of the play!!!

In my mind, this means Patti recognized that Audra is great in Gypsy: as a world-class hater, didn’t want to compliment her. Because surely if Patti Lupone had something negative to say, she would’ve said it.
