Just a little note for the pm crowd. Every morning this month, I am posting one of our animals dressed for Halloween. Most are worth looking for.

They definitely eat a lot more of those than the snakeheads!

My good LFS has had arapaima fry once. Usually they max out at redtail cats, and some of the big freshwater rays, or arrowana. So I was VERY stunned.

It’s also escapees from the tropical fish farms that were there before SE Asia became a lot more popular as a source. Breeding ponds outside get flooded by hurricanes and now you’ve got plecos burrowing in the canals.

There are many great pictures to be had of osprey flying off with large goldfish from our local wetlands preserve boardwalk.

The big Amazon tank at the National Zoo (complete with arapaima) has a breeding population of African cichlids because the edge of the tank was visitor accessible and people dropped them in.

People have spent a lot of time building up the mythology of a 10 lbs bird. On one hand I’m glad it general means people will give wildlife a larger berth but also it can be exasperating. They’re not monsters. They’re just wildlife.

Discord as a forum is hellish because it’s just not made for it. It’s a chat service pretending and I hate that it’s what we’re stuck with.

Mongolian gerbils have a similar trait. It makes sense for most long tailed prey animals although you’d think squirrels would be at a bigger disadvantage without their tails as arboreal critters vs gerbils. Alive is better than dead though!

I hold that once you know how poorly attached a goose’s head is to its neck, it is hard to be frightened of them. Getting them to piss off is very much about body language and it’s not hard if they haven’t intimidated you first.

I was out on Oahu once at a natural area and a sow and piglets wandered out into the area next to the visitor center. Other tourists were walking up like “oh how cute!!” and I was very surprised no one got charged. Perhaps the sow was used to tourists.

I would much rather meet a black bear, I think.

The joke is that a black bear sees a hiker with a pack full of granola and trail mix and thinks “How do I get my food off that human?” and a cougar thinks “How do I get that pack off my food?”

I’d submit that a hog thinks “Food! WITH TOPPINGS!”

I have never gotten a cut glove that I bother to wear because they're always way too big and bulky and cause more of a hazard by making me clumsy. I just always use the guard and that works fine. I have never worried strongly about cutting myself while using it.

I've got a older Borner which is basically this. I like that the legs are set up so that you can hook them around a bowl and not have it slide off. And the guard is reasonably sized for my smaller hands.

I have restarted a fairly minimalist upper body workout (like two exercises that I do 3 sets each and that’s it) and I’m already doing the “I’m tired and hungry constantly thing”. Flesh is stupid.

And like, it pisses me off! I am BAD at texting & Discord. I am a lurker by heart. I was actually fairly lonely in those 6 months. These kind of services are where I make and keep friends and I fucking hate that they keep being run over by tech bros and other fuckery. We have enough on our plates!!

You know, in the six months or so between when twitter really imploded the first time and bsky got going, I spent a lot of time reading and doing art things and talking to my neighbors and I'm thinking I should pretend that's happened again.
