On this day in 1790, the Indigenous Northwestern Confederacy defeats US Army General Josiah Harmar's campaign of American territorial expansion. The Americans, after defeating the King who'd limited their expansion, immediately set to work installing themselves as monarchs over the west.

Carcerality is one of the main aspects of settler colonialism. Removal of Indigenous peoples and the restriction of their movement (as well as that of anyone who would aid them.) Gaza is treated as an open-air prison. Residential schools were a kind of prison.

Marx and Engels favored the territorial expansion of progressive
capitalism (as they considered it) , and took the part of the im-
perialists against the recalcitrant "backward'* tribes which the former
were attempting to subdue. Let us, for example, take Engels on
Algeria. In order to establish themselves, the French had to over-
come stubborn and long-continued resistance on the part of the
native tribes. When one of the chiefs, Abd-el-Kader, was taken,
Engels described his capture as "very fortunate," and offered the
following elaborate- and imperialist-sounding- rationalization:9
The struggle of the Bedouins was a hopeless one, and though the
manner in which brutal soldiers, like Bugeaud, have carried on the war
is highly blameworthy, the conquest of Algeria is an important and for-
tunate fact for the progress of civilization. The piracies of the Barbary
States, never interfered with by the English government as long as they
did not disturb their ships, could not be put down but by the conquest of
one of these states. And the conquest of Algeria has already forced the
Beys of Tunis and Tripoli, and even the Emperor of Morocco, to enter
upon the road of civilization. They were obliged to find other employ-
ment for their people than piracy, and other means of filling their
exchequer than tributes paid to them by the smaller states of Europe.

Anarchist Anti-Militarism

While today some anarchists in and outside of Ukraine vehemently support that state even as it engages in conscription and imprisonment, it's important to remember that most historical anarchists, such as Michel and Malatesta, were vehemently against militarism and conscription.
