The devastating, shortsighted attack on literature continues. List from Magic City Books. Who'd they miss? Note: the small publishers selected here for financial attack include (among other very worthy and important presses) @transitbooks.bsky.social, publisher of 2023 Nobel laureate Jon Fosse.

a long poem, typed and formatted, entitled β€œCreaturefemme Lament” by Liz Vaughan. There is a square art piece in the lower right corner of two femmes holding each other on the bank of a pond as an alligator swims past, with stars overhead, that is credited as being created by Corey C.

Today states evidently began receiving letters cutting off IMLS grants to states. A reminder that these grants help fund or organize things like Libby ebooks, student databases, recording for the blind, broadband to rural communities and more. Call your Congress. Use the 5Calls app script.

We’re Witnessing the Fall of Public Health… and Your Best Tool is a Mask Measles in Texas, bird flu in Louisiana, tuberculosis in Kansas and Covid everywhere. Public health has been dying a slow death for years, we can’t count on it anymore. What can we count on? A mask!

If you want to fight fascism? Wear a mask.

If you want to show solidarity with disabled people? Wear a mask.

If you want to protect your own health? Wear a mask.

If you recognize that no one is coming to save us? Wear a mask.

My ultimate guide to respirators:

To engage in resistance, you need to engage in acts of resistance. πŸ§ͺ

You DO NOT NEED TO:
1. Sign up to attend a protest
2. Use your real name if you must sign up for something (any list you sign is insecure)
3. Use your work email address (don't)

Don't trust anyone telling you that you have to

If you use AI to create your writing, I can’t guarantee you’ll never be caught. You may even cobble together something an editor won’t distinguish from writing a human produced. But what I can guarantee you is this: that will the hollowest of victories for the smallest and most fleeting of gains.

i’ve been sent my first contract to sign as a writerβ€”it’s just for a small story sale, less than $10, but i’m still so excited πŸ’š even though the current climate is dire in many ways, the future feels very tangible right now

I strongly advise you to get this into your mind and then to try and drill it into the minds of everyone you know. Do not comply in advance. These hateful authoritarian lunatics are incompetent and stupid. They are relying on you treating them with respect and compliance to achieve anything

Please do not use AI generated illustrations for your posts, blogs, etc. I prefer no pics or crappy clipart or whatever to obviously AI generated stuff. If you post AI generated pics I will most likely block you.

Why? AI pics are hella bad for the environment AND are built on the use of stolen art.

Opinion: Portland’s monuments should include the writers who inspire us As the city reckons with its public monuments, it should look to honor its literary giants as well, writes Literary Arts Executive Director Andrew Proctor. The city can start by honoring one of Oregon...

Andrew Proctor of Literary Arts writes, "Even as a 'book town,' Portland has few monuments to our writers ... The city should look to rectify this oversight and can start by memorializing one of Portland’s most groundbreaking authors, Ursula K. Le Guin."

a picture of the cover of the book β€˜someone you can build a nest in’ on the shelf at a bookstore. the cover features a woman holding a lantern as a smiling, inhuman silhouette looms behind her. a handwritten recommendation is attached to the book.

one of my favorite parts of working at a bookstore is getting to write rec cards!! β€˜someone you can build a nest in’ is the last book i read. i had a lot of fun with it (though it was difficult to explain to the people who asked what i was reading). it has monsters & queerness & class commentary :)
