Like a boss? Maybe, but there are other words I'd use to describe a good leader

Just read this fun quote from George Orwell: "every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it"

What might be usefully reclassified as a crime is printing red text on a black background - it's the same as using invisible ink as far as I'm concerned.

It is surprising how much content is closed off to me because I am - like many men of my age - colour blind. If people use a coloured map or graph in a presentation or report, I am so used to it being meaningless to me, I just wait politely until we can move on.

I made an unusual (but also very mature) (some might even say "impressive") decision last night to stop reading a novel I was not enjoying. I'm still feeling guilty about it.

Lift door open and close buttons

Lift door open and close buttons

Lifts don't need the "><" (close door) button, it's just confusing. We just need the "<>" button but clearly marked as"OPEN" so there's no excuse for not opening the doors for people

I don't know if this is right, I only just thought of it in a wistful moment earlier, but If I could give my younger self any advice it'd be to work out how to make a living that fits who you want to be as your top priority, everything else can flow from that.

I'm not sure what to think of this, and can only speak for myself, but I think male loneliness isn't just a consequence of the above negative self-inflicted behaviours, there are other factors such as pressures of work, neurodiversity etc.

One thing social media has shown me is that humans are far funnier than they are rational

One of my favourite LinkedIn things is when I get the "I looked at your webpage and love what your company is doing" message. I don't work for a company and we haven't got a webpage, but sure ... whatever

Fascinating conversations today about inclusion at work, and how we all have a role in creating workplaces where people can feel like they belong and will be equally respected - and the systems and processes will support equitable outcomes #inclusion #dei

Some people just aren't very good at recruitment.

Here's a quote we can all relate to "There are very few moments in a man's existence when he experiences so much ludicrous distress, or meets with so little charitable commiseration, as when he is in pursuit of his own hat" (Charles Dickens)

I have done the same, but usually to stop myself crying - I remember one kid in my daughter's class, who'd got straight A*s in everything, got a standing ovation from his classmates (he'd have got his head kicked in in my school) - I counted the tiles a lot that day.

You must be saying things they don't like, and there's nothing more macho than being scared of being challenged or being wrong.

Friends here in Spain seem surprised when I tell them they're not allowed to just support Leeds United, willy-nilly. It doesn't work like that! You don't choose Leeds, Leeds chooses you, and then you need to provide a medical certificate to show you can handle the stress #LUFC

Saw this on Chris Williamson's 3MM mail a while ago: โ€œWould you want to be roommates with this person for 3 months?โ€ as a good way to assess if someone's a good fit when making hiring decisions - no! This is a way to hire people like you based on irrelevant assumptions!

I feel sorry for my older self, that poor fella has a lot to deal with: โ€œSomewhere in the future, your older self is watching you through memories. Whether it's with regret or nostalgia depends on what you do now.โ€ โ€” Gurwinder Bhogal

The problem is that even if you create a long list of things to fill your time, no one is holding you to account, and nothing much happens if you don't do the things on the list ... mid 50s (my age) is young to lose that sense of usefulness and meaning.

How odd, I appear to have been blocked by the person who posted the above. That's sad, I hate being blocked.

Bit rubbish with the LinkedIn puzzles this morning, especially Queens. Must be a slow brain day.

There is nothing so humbling as waiting at a bus stop for a bus that never turns up - this can mean missing appointments, interviews, meetings ... day ruined with no explanation or information. Then again, it's nice when they do turn up.

Completely agree. I have changed my habits to get away from screens and back to books - although obviously not at this moment because I'm typing this ...

I loved this book, it's exactly what I find endlessly fascinating, the intersection of geography and humanity, although I felt the book could have been published with more actual maps - ideally colourful maps on glossy pages

Too many training courses are designed around what knowledge/skill there is available to include, rather than what would really move the dial on performance.

Gender Decoder: find subtle bias in job ads

I put the last job ad I wrote into Gender Decoder and found it had some masculine bias (because it used the words "autonomy" and "objectives") - not convinced in this case, but interesting exercise to ensure more inclusive recruitment gender-decoder.katmatfield.com
