very annoying that some tech is so capable (generating AI videos with text prompts) whereas other things that are around forever are still terrible β€” e.g., properly categorizing spending categories from CC companies or on financial planning apps β€” looking at you, @quicken.bsky.social Simplifi

I’m talking about people that I know personally, which is a very specific demographic. Is anecdotal information like that broadly useful? Maybe not. I bring it up b/c it aligns with the opening posters observation

I knows lots of people in the West who who have environmental concerns, probably vote D, and simultaneously love giant diesel trucks and would not buy EVs. the justification is always something along those lines or β€œis mining lithium really better”

ugh β€” what a dumb idea. Easy to think that AI will start writing better culture war drivel but actual reporting on things that matter will require a level of agency that is far away on the horizon.

Well articulated. I worry about the incentives moving forward for putting out good info onto the web. The incentive for putting out *good* info was low pre-AI... but even weaker now.

Could you comment on the role of short term renewable supply and demand *forecasting* required to make smart grid balancing work? Are forecast products out there and are they good? I’m curious how much numerical weather prediction ends up mattering for this market.

This has been my thinking β€” I don’t see how current AI emulator models could to narrow estimates of ECS, for instance. Hybrid physics/AI approaches that maybe improve certain land/ocean/cloud parameterizations could help (and also reduce run/compute time but not to nothing).

Always interesting to me that when we talk about gigatons of co2 emitted β€” only 37.5% of that mass comes from carbon, the rest is o2

I really don’t think I’m being hyperbolic when I say this β€” a Venn diagram of the online communities and media engagement between doge staffers and right wing terrorists (e.g., Charleston) would… probably show a lot of overlap

If you read about the history of dams in the USA, then you’ll find that this very question was a major concern by the Bureau of Rec (though their early estimates may have been too high). There’s even an off hand comment about reservoir evaporation in the movie Chinatown

I’ve read the article and I don’t think there is an error in the original report. I suppose it does highlight how the question of β€œhow much water does ai use” is actually a complicated question. Accounting for evaporation from reservoirs is a real thing!

I think the bigger issue is that all politics is discussed in terms of horse racing (β€œthis bad for dems.”) vs making an actual judgment (β€œthis is bad/illegal/unconstitutional”). And it’s a lame way to appear serious/impartial
