Turned up to a lecture theatre this AM to find it was locked. Waited in the rain with 90 students for 10 minutes. Estates got there and opened the door, which was apparently unlocked after all, very easily. A story that sums up my general hapless vibe perhaps better than any other.

Me, someone's mean teacher: you will never amount to anything
(Internally: I certainly hope I won't be proven wrong about this)

Yeah the 'beurette' trope def seems relevant! Nacira Guénif's distinction between beurette/française voilée too (in La République mise à nu par son immigration, 2006)

Ah right! No idea on tracksuits - nothing from the top of my head on the hijab as a fashion item as opposed to the usual laïcité femonationalism etc (can keep thinking, not on my computer just now), but might publications on e.g. burkini, sports hijabs etc be similar?

Like comparing the tracksuit and the hijab? Or about girls wearing hijabs with a tracksuit? Tbh nothing comes to mind but could have a think!

WHY YOU NEED A HUMAN TRANSLATOR 🚨
DeepL is able to correctly identify that Spongebob's French name is Bob l'éponge. What it can't do is tell you that Squidward's name, for some reason, is Carlo. Do you want your readers to think you're SOME KIND OF MORON who doesn't know about Carlo Tentacule?

Just sent an email to about 100 people only to immediately notice I'd included the words 'further details' twice in the same sentence. Nightmarish. Awful. Why do bad things happen to good people

Again, I'm not well informed on this, so don't mean to suggest that anti-American imperialism necessarily equates to being 'one of the goodies'. Ffs though, consent manufacturing machine go brrrrrr

I'm not well informed on Venezuela tbh but can't get my head around how much of a total fucking rube anyone vaguely familiar with the history of US intervention in Latin America would need to be to think that yes, everything they've heard about Maduro is surely unambiguously accurate.

People are going to try and lure you into debates about whether Maduro was a good guy or not and the thing is, it doesn’t matter for the purposes of discussing whether violent kidnappings and extrajudicial murders by the US government are ok. No, they aren’t! End of convo.

It does seem some of the media coverage of her passing is reflecting some of this. I don't suppose I'm suggesting her death should immediately be followed by blanket vilification, but the tone of some of the 'iconic French actress' stuff is already pretty nauseating.
