Sign the Petition Stop mental health cuts across Edinburgh

These cuts will end Scotland's largest mental health based exhibition, Out Of Sight Out Of Mind, and many other collective advocacy projects. Our funders don't realise how much us lived experience volunteers give for free through hours of workshops just to improve the lives of everyone like us.

🧵NOT BY ME, this is a post from someone who wants to remain anonymous but works extensively with trans people pre-transition. They were asked by someone “why do you think that’s so much [coverage of trans people] in the news at the moment?”

This was their response:

Reminded this evening- I was at a department store looking for a bra and this 60 ish year old guy came up to me. I braced in dread, but really softly he asked, “Can I ask you for some help? My wife just had a mastectomy and I want to get her something that will make her feel pretty but is soft.”

o the Observer Readers' Editor,

On the 9th of February, 2025 The Observer published an editorial titled "No woman should be forced to change her clothes in front of a male colleague" by Sonia Sodha.
This article can be accessed here:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/feb/09/no-woman-should-be-forced-to-change-her-clothes-in-front-of-a-trans-colleague

Throughout this article, Sodha regularly misgenders Dr. Beth Upton, referring to her as "a male doctor who identifies as female" and " the male doctor in question," and implies that Upton is indulging " a cross-dressing sexual paraphilia." Sodha closes with "There is a cautionary tale from across the Atlantic, where Democrats’ stubborn and unpopular defence of men’s rights to self-identify into women’s sport has dropped the unlikeliest of moral victories into President Donald Trump’s lap, allowing a man accused of serious sexual assault to somehow position himself as a defender of women’s rights."

Section 12 of your own editorial code states,
"12. Discrimination and incitement to hatred i) Journalists must avoid prejudicial or pejorative reference to an individual’s race, colour, ethnicity, nationality, religion, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or to any physical or mental illness."

Further, the Equality Act specifically prohibits discrimination on grounds of gender identity, stating "The following characteristics are protected characteristics—... gender identity." (Section 4)

There is no possible way that repeatedly referring to a trans woman as "a male doctor who identifies as female", implies that she lives her life as some sort of full-time sex kink, and then proceeds to blame Donald Trump on trans women or the support of them is not a violation of your own editorial code.

As you, as an organisation, have chosen not to be subject to oversight by Ipso, I expect the Observer's Readers' Editor to publicly acknowledge the failure to comply with your own editorial code of …

A template, should you need it. Emails to observer.readers@observer.co.uk . Let's make sure they know hate is not okay here. In fact, it's pretty weird and gross.

"Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews, but out of a hope for restored patriotism, or a sense of economic anxiety, or a hope to preserve their religious values, or dislike of their opponents, or raw political opportunism, or convenience, or ignorance, or greed. That word is "Nazi." Nobody cares about their motives anymore. They joined what they joined. They lent their support and their moral approval. And, in so doing, they bound themselves to everything that came after.
Who cares any more what particular knot they used in the binding?"

💯 THIS!!! When we look back at the 'gender critical' transphobes who sided with the extreme-right in their joint hatred of trans people, nobody will care about their motives or justifications!…

I sincerely don’t know why people aren’t physically stopping those dorks. Move shit. Lock doors. Lose the keys. Everyone switch seats. Turn off all the lights. Switch the signs on the elevator lobby. Make the settings all silly. Use a different language. Wear costumes. Fill rooms with balloons

Mobile phones don't harm our kids. Bad journalism harms our kids.

Trans rights don't threaten womens' rights. Bad journalism threatens womens' rights.

Immigration doesn't hurt our culture. Bad journalism hurts our culture.

If you must panic, at least pick the right target.
