Almost everyone gets winded climbing stairs; it's hard exercise. Elite athletes, unless they're specifically training to climb stairs, will get winded doing it. "Fitness" means fit for something specific, and for most of us "climbing stairs without breathing hard" isn't the thing we're fit for.
