But if you love cities and are accustomed to the noise and the sounds they make — can it lower blood pressure when you return to it after being in the country… asking for a friend.

Every stage of this process - his arrest, spending a year in jail, being dumped on the streets to die - would be deeply shameful in a society that actually valued human life.

OR passes tax disconnect, saves $291 million Oregon Capital Chronicle reports that the Oregon legislature passed SB 1507, which will disconnect the state's income tax from the federal tax code for a year and a half. By refusing to automatically apply federal tax rate cuts passed last year, the state will prevent $291 million in lost revenue. OR governor Tina Kotek is expected to sign the measure. Meanwhile, Washington state Democrats are planning up to half a billion in cuts to childcare subsidies for low income families – maybe they shouldn't have tucked a bunch of sales tax and business tax cuts in that millionaires' tax bill they passed. Change takes so so so so much time in terms of land use and planing! Hearing that there will be a pilot for 4 weekends of a car free Ave in the U District this summer. There have been 1,000 of hours of advocacy for this for decades. We know people want this. King County Metro has stood in the way.

NEW: Guards have taken away crayons, colored pencils & paper during recent room searches at Dilley, according to detainees and others. After one inspection, the children just “cried and cried and cried,” a mother said. The facility denies the claims.

I think probably the one misconception that bothers me about bike lanes is that people assume they are for those who bike...when really they are for those who are too scared to bike.

California and Illinois have nearly 800,000 state employees combined. It's the state government who processes the payroll, they could divert federal withholdings to a state-run escrow fund by throwing a switch.

That's something like $200 million of federal tax revenue per MONTH to help Minnesota.

It’s time for legislators to wake up to funding transportation for older adults properly

They won't start with banning birth control. First they'll lie about it. Then dictate who can prescribe it, use it, fund it, in what forms, and for how long. Suddenly, your doctor won't call you back. I know this is what they'll do because it's what they're doing to transgender healthcare right now.

It’s hard to maintain this level of disgust everyday and not have it wear you down. It infects every aspect of your life. Find joy, and find ways to push back alongside community together. We have to keep pushing back.

Primary dispatch of CRs can occur for the types of calls set forth in Subparagraphs A-C below; provided that dispatch has confirmed: • The individual that is the subject of the call is located in an open public location (meaning an area such as a City street, sidewalk or park) or a publicly-owned building (e.g., City Hall, a library, a community center). The individual is not in a vehicle or private business that is open to the public. • The area is not a known hazard (i.e., flagged in CAD). • There is no report of aggressive or threatening behavior towards others, destructive or confrontational behavior, or behavior posing a danger to others. • There are no visible narcotic paraphernalia or weapons. • There are no minors present with the individual who is the subject of the call • There is no indication that a crime has occurred. • The subject of the call is not located in a homeless encampment, which is defined as four (4) or more tents or structures that appear to a reasonable person to be used for camping. • There is no extreme behavior that might warrant investigation for a potential involuntary commitment (e.g., public nakedness accompanied by crisis).

These are the situations where they can't respond, including "areas where a person could be trespassed, such as parking lots" in the prohibition on places where a crime may have been committed. Note that SPOG's examples include a person who gets naked in public, a clear example of a mental crisis.

Police have said their contract bars the CARE team from responding to calls outside private businesses, along with other explicit restrictions. The result: cops still respond to most crisis calls.

In competitive authoritarianism (US right now) there's often a "loyal opposition" that's essential to the regime. They are so wedded to "decorum," they go along with rites & rituals that help regime prop up veneer of normalcy, undermining clear view of regimes actions & aims.
