It’s inevitable when creative people launch a movement, others will come along and monetize it, thereby sucking the life from the result. Creatives will move on to the next thing while Basics will purchase said items in droves.

I like what you write, I just need to get to it and read it without regular interruption. My suggestion is to make the site mobile friendly and reduce the advertising footprint drastically. When ads get in the way of engagement, they aren’t worth it.

I ended up scrolling up and down trying to read. It eventually was so aggravating I stopped reading. This has happened multiple times for me because you post an article I want to read and try, but the experience with the site itself is harsh.

Feedback time. I often pull up your site on my phone. Your content is great. The way the site behaves with ads is what kills it for me. I was trying to read your recent Legion post and I’d zoom into the page to read. Doing that caused the very top ad to display again.

That is the beauty of choice. Which is why I’m not happy in general about Warner needing to be sold and acquired. But they failed over the years to run themselves properly so this is what happens.

The failure here is traditional studios not keeping up with tech.

Another great example of that is owning the largest IP catalogs on the planet and letting ChatGPT steal all the content to make GenAI shit from their IP. The studios should be suing OpenAI into oblivion and building their own.

Blockbuster did not have the technical insight to create streaming. Nor the business understanding of why to do so. They would not have been able to break their own model to do it. Owning real estate dominated that situation I imagine, reducing flexibility. Netflix had no such concerns.

So yes, you do get low cost foreign film, but that’s because they’re making that content for other countries.

“Pushing more budget foreign films” I think is a narrow characterization of Netflix. Netflix is our first truly global studio. In that I mean they produce content for other countries in those countries. Old Hollywood does not do that.

I had a hard fantasy about working on old cars. Then in my twenties, as it was heating up, I had a friend who was restoring a 50’s Thunderbird. The dash was pneumatic. That broke me from ever wanting to restore old cars.

Then I moved to California and I’ve never had the space to try again.

I got a Subaru because I wanted to be able to understand the engine when I open the hood. The BMW I had before that was a money pit and when I opened the hood, it was a marvel of nothing accessible without custom tools.

That said, I also just change wiper blades. 😊
