After pointing at Democrats and saying they are "crazy," Trump says, "We’re lucky we have a country, with people like this. Democrats are destroying our country, but we stopped it, just in the nick of time."
Just insanely destructive. Indefensible — but Republicans stood and clapped.

New SAVE Act Bills Would Still Block Millions of Americans From Voting The “show your papers” requirement is an attack on the freedom to vote.

Trump is now talking about the SAVE America Act, which will, you know. Save America. By forcing people to show forms of identification that most people don't have

Trump’s lies and deception are at such a clip it’s nearly impossible to keep track, but, the blatant, inciteful racist & xenophobic rhetoric against the Somali community is too dangerous & disgusting to be ignored. No one should sit in that chamber giving audience to such hatred.

Progressive Win in New Jersey Hinged on Anti-ICE Organizing - The American Prospect Analilia Mejia won a close congressional primary race by preparing constituents for encounters with ICE. She warned that the agency’s surveillance technology needs more attention.

Analilia Mejia was doing ICE Watch trainings at her campaign events. She was preparing future constituents for encounters with immigration agents. And she won.
In an interview with @whitneycwimbish.bsky.social, one of her big priorities: end ICE's mass surveillance.

Pop star Bad Bunny needed a Puerto Rican history scholar. UW–Madison had just the one. Bad Bunny collaborated with UW–Madison history professor Jorell Meléndez-Badillo on Puerto Rican narratives that accompany the new album “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS.”

Not at all surprised to learn that Bad Bunny has a historical adviser. His halftime show was a reminder that our history and culture are deeply intertwined with the rest of the western hemisphere. We should think of his performance as part of #America250. #SuperBowl

These are the high schoolers taking a stand against ICE: ‘You can’t let despair take over’ Thousands of students across the US have been walking out of their schools to protest ICE in their communities

for my latest @us.theguardian.com talked to teens leading and joining anti-ICE walkouts from TX to MD to WI.

one NYC teen: "I feel scared [of ICE] every day... But I’m not going to let that stop me, because bravery is just the positive way to say you’re scared, and I’d rather be brave than scared."

I know racists don't care, but some of the most wonderful things about music is how it transcends language. Emotion, expression, culture, connection are felt and understood across culture, generations, and time. And being exposed to it all is a beautiful opportunity no one should take for granted.

Benito is a threat b/c he makes art so alluring and enjoyable you want to understand everything about it and then you end up learning about sugar and slavery and colonialism and the Taínos and Hawaii and then you probably have some thoughts of your own, and that's why art is powerful and dangerous

It's unsurprising that the Nazis waged a relentless war on creativity, especially the modern and the avant-garde, in everything from architecture and design to painting.
Hitler himself was a failed painter whose work was most notably deficient in his inability to realistically capture human subjects. As Charlie English writes in his account of the Nazi war on art,
In this sense, Hitler's painting supports Arendt's theory of National Socialism-that it was defined by its banality and lack of empathy. The Nazis relied on the ability of people not to imagine themselves in someone else's shoes.
The lack of a connection was very much the point.
There is a right-wing war on empathy that observers like Bradley_ Onishi have been cataloguing for months and that was most recently documented by Hillary_ Clinton for The Atlantic. But I don't believe you can decouple this from the war on art and artists.

I share the belief that the arts are central to the cause of human freedom. This isn't only because of the expansive potential of the imagination. It's also because of the well of universal feeling and experience from which art draws in order to evoke something in its audience. And this experience pulls us—as listeners, viewers, observers, whether the medium—into a cycle of mutual edification. Art helps us to know one another better and to know ourselves more honestly. And it helps us to process our awe and terror at the world and our existence. It's why those with authoritarian impulses always want to control it, to limit what it shows us, and to silence its practitioners. What they fear most is the plain truth of being human.

This is an important point.

Empathy—in and of itself—is anti-fascist.

The arts—and the project of higher education as a whole—teach empathy, enabling you to put yourself in other people’s shoes.

So to a fascist, they must be destroyed.

A militarized federal police force that acts out of loyalty on the whim of a political leader who relishes retribution and adulation is the tip of an iceberg. You don't build a nuclear bomb for peace any more than you build a national surveillance apparatus just to manage a border wall. This kind of weaponry could effectively nullify our Fourth Amendment right to protection from unreasonable search and seizure. It also could more easily enable the government to trample on your free speech. And, it could do all of this without meaningful transparency or oversight." - Tressie McMillan Cottom, "ICE Is Watching You," NYT, Feb. 3, 2026.(https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/03/opinion/ice-surveillance-protesters.html?unlocked_article_code=1.JVA.kIT2.6nz-gNQpBfCk&smid=url-share)
