Teachers are artists. The classroom is very much our canvas; we either breathe life into it or suck the life out of it. We set that tone. Figuring out how to find and sustain one’s own joy is essential to what we do as educators.

A policeman sees a drunk man searching for something under a streetlight and asks what the drunk has lost. He says he lost his keys and they both look under the streetlight together. After a few minutes the policeman asks if he is sure he lost them here, and the drunk replies, no, and that he lost them in the park. The policeman asks why he is searching here, and the drunk replies, "this is where the light is".[2]

The end result is that "data-driven decision making" can actually insulate and isolate: preventing responsiveness to issues with less robust data collection or demanding action where none may be warranted *because* it's what we have the most of. We end up drawing teachers to the lamppost...

It's interesting to talk with school leaders & districts about the sort of terminal condition of school data today. Ironically, they have more data than they've ever had before but lack the processes & resources to make sense of it in ways that are timely, actionable, AND meaningful...

template for reflecting on three paths of development as a teacher for yourself going forward

Thinking ahead to the upcoming school year, I want all of my reflecting/planning to start with this document once again:

1⃣ what will my "new" be as a teacher?
2⃣ what do I want to get "better" at?
3⃣ what is a "strength" I want to double-down on?

Black Lives Matter fundamentally broke these people’s brains. They couldn’t bear the idea that they might have to tell a different story about this country and thus tell a different story about themselves. They hated it, and now they are using everything they have to never feel that way again.

One of the real problems is that too many people conveniently believe the opposite of diversity is merit, and the opposite of inclusion is high standards.

Yeah, that’s just not the case.

I wish I knew I should teach social emotional strategies not just punish or give consequences because students didn’t have them.
