Up to one in five kids experience #LongCOVID after infection, affecting memory, focus, and processing speed. Without support, students fall further behind. Schools must recognize post-viral cognitive impairment and provide accommodations to help kids succeed. Ignoring this issue fails our children.

COVID has been barely discussed by this current govt. Scrapping free tests, making welfare harder to access/making time off work less tenable, and avoiding COVID as a policy issue, all increase our collective risk of #longCOVID.
Nobody likes this reality - we have to deal with it anyway. #nzpol

The US just voted alongside Russia, Belarus and North Korea against a UN resolution to support Ukraine.

This is a wake-up call for all those cheerleading Trump in our country.

Youโ€™ve been clear in saying that Covid has not gone away. You ask people to wear masks at your events. But that attitude is not necessarily where the rest of the world is. How do you think about continuing to take precautions and advising others to do so when it feels as if society has moved on? I do it for a bunch of reasons. Firstly, I have learned that I enjoy not being sick. I know that the cost of long Covid is real and substantial, and I donโ€™t want to run that risk lightly. I also know that I have many friends and people Iโ€™m close to who are immunocompromised. So for the sake of the people around me, I also donโ€™t want to get sick. When I do events, I wear a mask for those reasons, and because I know that every time I do a talk, while the vast majority of people in the audience have probably moved on, there are going to be other people who havenโ€™t. I think it makes a huge difference to them to have the person at the front of the stage wear a mask. It tells them, Itโ€™s not weird. So I do it for that reason, too. In terms of holding this line at a point when a large swath of society has moved on, I have written a lot about the panic-neglect cycle.

RTHM's Take:

"This study adds even more compelling evidence that we should be urgently developing and trialing multiple therapies (and combinations of therapies) that could help clear persistent SARS-CoV2 proteins in Long COVID patients to see if doing so can improve symptoms and reduce any elevated markers of neurodegeneration."

SARS-CoV-2 spike protein can persist in the brain

New Study: SARS-CoV-2 spike protein can persist in the brain

Recent research reveals that the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein can persist in the brain.

This discovery suggests a potential link to chronic inflammation & an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases following acute COVID.

Could this explain some of the long-term neurological effects of COVID-19?

"Lockdown" sounds so dramatic. What I remember most is ordering pizza, working from home, curbside grocery pickup, public masking indoors, patio lunches, and long walks. The retelling sounds like forced confinement in a Syrian prison. Somehow, I survived. /s

FOI Shows COVID Is Still Striking Albertaโ€™s Acute Care Centres | The Tyee More than 300 new outbreaks and 3,000 individual infections raise questions about prevention.

Legislation states that we must protect all staff from preventable illness. But for COVID, it really seems like that is no longer applicable. And b/c a substantial % of infections, even in young, healthy people, go on to cause long term illness, why has it been allowed to infect people at work.โ€

'Festive flu' warning: 'Tidal wave' of infections leads to 70% jump in hospital cases The boss of NHS England is urging people to get vaccinated before Christmas to protect against serious illness and "festive flu".

Many of those admitted for influenza will then get Covid-19 in hospital through nosocomial infection. Co-infection with both flu and Covid leads to increased morbidity and mortality, and increased duration of hospital stay. Yet little to no airborne infection control.

The real lesson from Zeraatkar et alโ€™s review work is not that GET and CBT are probably effective for Long COVID, but that five years into the crisis, a mere 24 clinical trials have published results for a condition which affects 400 million people worldwide (8), of which only 4 studied drug interventions. Long COVID research should learn from the mistakes of ME research, and swerve away from an inexplicable focus on rehabilitative approaches to the production of well-designed and ambitious trials (9) into therapeutics that target the immune dysfunction, persistent pathogens, vascular abnormalities, and mitochondrial dysfunction that have been shown to underlie Long COVID symptomatology (10,11).

Here is the conclusion of our rapid response: we need serious, well-designed and ambitious clinical trials that target the mechanisms which have already been shown to dysfunction in people with Long COVID

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Essentials of Diagnosis and Management Despite myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) affecting millions of people worldwide, many clinicians lack the knowledge to appropriately diagnose or manage ME/CFS. Unfortunately, clinical guidance has been scarce, obsolete, or potentially harmful. Consequently, up to 91% of patients in the United States remain undiagnosed, and those diagnosed often receive inappropriate treatment. These problems are of increasing importance because after acute COVID-19, a significant percentage of people remain ill for many months with an illness similar to ME/CFS.

These are superb consensus recommendations on the diagnosis and management of ME from The States.

The authors are true experts in the field who actively treat patients.

Iโ€™m determined to produce something similar in the UK (also huge fan of not reinventing the wheel).
