Dentist in a small Oregon town. Probably thinking about fly fishing. Former social scientist for defense clients. Some of you may remember me from such places as Uzbekistan, Leavenworth, or MacDill. Go Ducks!

I have only been fishing this river since late fall, but never had a fish, stocked or wild, want a single bit of flash in my flies other than one I failed to land that ate a Duracell.

Several of today's players.

First one has the cutthroat slash seen in some hatchery strain rainbows. I have read it's a McCloud River Rainbow trait.

This is the kind of thing that gets me excited nowadays.

Did I catch any on a dry fly? No.

Did I catch any on a soft hackle blue winged olive trailing off a dry just under the surface? Yes. A good number for an hour or so in February.

I'm doing that now with my kids and younger employees, who are pretty much the people you're talking about.

About 650 winters have come up the ladder. I'm sure that will pick up once the rain finally comes.

Got a call while in the middle of the river and had to leave early, so didn't even see the trout rising today.

Was pretty stoked on how that sculpzilla turned out. Way less stocked to have lost it. Anyway, short session seeing how far I could get out into the extremely low river swinging some flies.

During my first meeting, I hoped this wouldn't be a jerk off, time wasting, meeting focused endeavor.

Biggest outcome of that meeting is that we are going to have more meetings.

Best personal outcome is using the position to connect people outside of the state agencies.

Yep! I was recently appointed to a state advisory board. Legally, the state has to take outside organization nominations, otherwise I'm sure it would be fully staffed by Portland area folks, even though it deals with rural policy. And our annual conference is in Bend!

This is the the entirety of Oregon policymaking. It's all study groups and commissions employing professional activists in Portland and Salem. (Eugene, to say nothing of the rest of the state, is excluded because they're not the cool kids.)

I fished a new rod today, a 9' 4wt Echo Trout X. It was pretty sick. Feels so different from my Carbon XLs.

The olive pettirosso delivers almost immediately. Then I switch it up and lose one on a dry (after a great eat), another on a streamer, and one more on a Duracell, which previously hasn't produced for me.

Lessons: keep moving and technique trumps pattern

I'm down about 65 since May. I'm much colder. But I'm also a lot more active. I'll be out in the cold, standing in 40 degree water (in waders), and am usually warmer when outside because I'm moving so much more.

At home I'm freezing.

They want to expand this bullshit to a statewide plan for all residents and force providers to participate as a condition of licensure. My family has lived here since about the time it became a state. If they do it, I would be tempted to sell my practice and port my license to a new state.

I live in a democratic state that runs Medicaid like shit. The way they pay providers narrows the network to large corporate outfits. When nobody gets care because appointments aren't available, they cut provider pay because patients aren't utilizing their coverage.

My professional opinion having worked with these guys is that most of the people who ran counterinsurgency operations are statistically the most likely to end up in the ER after getting stuck in a finger trap.

Everything they're doing is content creation. That's what they'd do here. The declaration is content. Killing more people is content. Then Trump says he won. More content. Just a TV show to his hog followers.
