As a survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre, Viola Ford Fletcher bravely shared her story so that we’d never forget this painful part of our history. Michelle and I are grateful for her lifelong work to advance civil rights, and send our love to her family.

It’s a bird… it’s a plane… it’s Super-Kipekee! Her bright blue 'cape' is as practical as it is stylish: Newly orphaned calves arrive cold, traumatised, and desperately missing their mothers' warmth. A soft blanket becomes their security – physical comfort that says "you're safe, you're not alone."

"It’s a boy! Yesterday, our Voi team awoke to the best surprise: Naipoki had given birth to her first baby. As is tradition among our ex-orphans, she immediately journeyed home to celebrate with the people who raised her."

Our anti-poaching dogs aren’t just working dogs – they’re much-loved members of the ranger family. Each is paired with a handler, building trust and teamwork through hours of training. On long patrols, first-aid trained handlers carry up to 8 litres of water each to keep everyone hydrated!

This sums up Zigi perfectly – bold, curious and a bit of a showboat. As Umani’s youngest grandcalf, he has no shortage of nannies. His mother, Zongoloni is one of our success stories. Where Amali goes, our herd follows. She reminds us of a young Lima Lima, forging ahead, alerting them of danger and tracking down any wayward members of the herd. She is easy to recognise with distinctive trunk — a poacher’s snare severed the tip. Our survivor has adapted marvellously.

We live in a fast-paced world where being busy can be seen as a badge of honour. There's no doubt that, behind the scenes, our Nursery is a hive of activity (milk bottles don't mix themselves!) yet the orphans remind us what truly matters: spending time with family, and taking a moment to rest.

Pardamat and Olomunyak are evenly matched – usually!

One morning, Olomunyak approached from behind and gave Pardamat a shove. This invitation to play was not welcomed. Trumpeting, Pardamat turned around and the boys clashed heads in a serious contest of strength before he calmed down quickly.

Mzinga's journey has been one of quiet determination. Rescued as a tiny calf, she has grown into a confident young elephant who provides a gentle welcoming presence to newly rescued orphans arriving at our Nursery.

New baby alert! Yesterday morning, Kilabasi made the pilgrimage home to proudly introduce her new baby - a little girl we’ve named Kanika. Kanika brings the total of calves born to wild living orphans to 79!

Arthi's tummy is always set to "food o'clock". He's the first to bellow for milk around feeding time and, after finishing his bottle, he trumpets for seconds. If no leftovers are around to be snaffled up, he'll make the most of the fresh browse on offer in the Park instead.

Godoma has decided she's ready to become a mother – even if her chosen "baby" isn't quite ready to leave! This ex-orphan tried to kidnap her favourite dependent orphan, Baraka, one morning this month. The Keepers noticed immediately and called back all the ex-orphans so Baraka didn't have to choose.

Bold and strong like her ex-orphan mother Sonje, one afternoon, Sulwe showed her mettle when warthogs emerged from their burrow and caught the group unawares. The nannies quickly gathered the babies, but Sulwe stood her ground and blew a squeaky, shrill trumpet to chase the intruders away!

Tiny, surprisingly feisty, and the undisputed darling of the Nursery herd. Just like her name, which means ‘unique’, Kipekee's story is far from typical – involving a rapid-response rescue to save this milk-starved baby, and a desperate attempt to treat her dying mother: swt.bio/kipekee

Ten years ago, a one-tusked wild elephant appeared in Ithumba. She was so disruptive the Keepers nicknamed her 'Crazy One'. Over the years, she has become a friendly fixture. On 1st October, she strolled up with a two-day-old baby in tow – debuting her newborn just as our ex-orphans do!

Rescued as a tiny 5-month-old calf from the Chyulu Hills in 2016, Esampu now lives completely wild, but continues to maintain the bonds with her human family that sustained her through her most vulnerable years. She chooses when to come and when to leave - exactly as it should be.

Busara can’t make up her mind!

She survived a devastating drought that brought so many orphans into our care, and now her biggest challenge is navigating stockade steps. Wisely she chose the direct route – an apt decision as her name means ‘wise’ in Swahili

These young friends have both incredible odds – Neshashi, rescued at three years old after her mother was shot, and Kitich, found abandoned in drought-stricken mountains. Now they are building strength and confidence together through play, and will one day roam the wild side by side too!
