The NYT was clearly trying with all their might to put a finger on the scales, but @chasestrangio.bsky.social calling the Supreme Court a "vile institution" in the new NYT piece would seem to me to place him firmly within the mainstream of what Democratic voters think of this court.

Seemingly lost in all of the NYT coverage is that what the Supreme Court did was effectively lower the evidentiary bar that state's have to meet to justify their bans. The lower courts that applied heightened scrutiny universally blocked the bans.

When Dobbs came down, the media rightly saw it as the culmination of a decades long effort to eliminate abortion rights by the conservative legal movement. When Skrmetti came down, the media blamed trans people and not that same conservative legal machine.

It's the same court and lawyers.

This framing exists because the decision is instantly obvious as one of the legal atrocities of US history, like Dred Scot, the 1870s Civil Rights Cases, Korematsu. The Times doesn’t want to say “The Supreme Court stripped rights out of law” so instead it says “Here’s why they did it to themselves”

These people are genuinely giddy at the prospect of creating a police state.

Even George W Busy and Dick Cheney got congressional approval for Iraq.

Trump is about to become more of an extreme and lawless warmonger than Bush and Cheney.

This is as big a lie as anything the Bush folks said in 2003. Demonstrably false.

Reactions from the ACLU on Skrmetti, line with my thinking: The decision is a little more limited and leaves many rulings against anti-transgender laws in tact.

However, it also creates huge loopholes to target transgender people, and the medical care ban will cause horror.

I will be the first to admit I was wrong about Barrett.

She would have taken away basically all transgender rights period. Would have overturned bathrooms, sports, schools, everything.

This is the *truly* horrific decision we narrowly avoided in Skrmetti.

Funny how conservatives at SCOTUS have no problem using the words "pregnant persons" when it is used to discriminate against abortion seekers and transgender people.
