Aleya is finally developing her summer coat: thick white fluff on top; mud on the feet, undercarriage, and snoot.

I have so many questions! Why does it have brass knuckles down at the bottom? Is it also a combat simulator?

I love this because it looks, to my untrained eye, like an AI cross between a bicycle and, I dunno, a metalworking shop. It could go in a museum.

Things I learned:

Need more variety (yarn, stitches).

Stop using white - it’s just gonna get grungy with use.

Consider working in vertical rows, not horizontal - or try to stop screwing up SlSt-CH joins, so I don’t need to sew the whole thing at the end.

Square panels instead of stripes?

To drop back to 30 stitches, instead of anything funky with decreases, I used the faux fur yarn. SC across, in each CH space.

When changing colors, I did BLO to keep transitions a little neater.

When I got to the sparkly yarn, I dropped to a 5mm (H) hook and did an inc in every stitch, for 60 SC across. The next row was HDC, CH, ending with two HDC. Then it was HDC to start, CH, and DC into each CH space, for a nice open pattern.

Perfect for threading with ribbon later.

I started with a rectangle 30 stitches across, loosely stitching with a 6.5mm (K) hook.

Most of the rows are simple patterns, either single stitches or alternating. I especially like HDC, SC, in multiple rows, where the next row’s HDC goes into the previous row’s SC. It’s a subtle texture.

Bernat Blanket white
Lion Brand faux fur black, separated from three strands to one
Bernat Pipsqueak white and gray
Caron Simply Soft sparkly white

(It’s approximately 700x less vexing than trying to sew together an amigurumi piece. Crocheting is fun. Sewing, not so much.)

My colors were slightly restricted by the yarn I have on hand, but it feels elegant.

Aleya just came inside with a giant freakin tyranid to crunch on as a little snack, and I ended up having to catch it with a roll of gaffer tape stuck to a swiffer, and I’m just done with living in a damn swamp.

The joy when you say, “Okay!”

Cheese wrappers are great for calling dogs in from a muddy backyard.

Stuff I need to share with my wife also goes into emails - again, searchable- like the eight million to-do lists we need about her mother’s house and medical stuff. This way, one of us always has it at hand.

I have an email with “groceries” as the subject. I emailed it to myself, and I can just reply to add more things to the list. When I put in a grocery order, I delete the email (and start a new one if there’s recurring or out of stock stuff).

And it’s all searchable.

Do you always have a writing implement at hand?

I switched everything to my Google calendar and email. Reminders (call someone, check something, do a thing) go in the calendar. Lists and notes go in an email.

Cheese wrappers cause pure chaos in this house. The first little crinkle can wake a sleeping zoi in the basement. It’s terrifying if you’re not braced for impact!

We’re all sleepy.

The traffic handle is a game changer. When you need to shorten up, it’s right there. When you have space, you can switch right back to the full lead.

I have a four-foot Biothane leash with a traffic handle for very crowded situations, and it’s fantastic.
