I guarantee you that when you are nine years into being ‘over 50’ you’ll be as exhausted as I am now from seeing the phase ‘over 50’ being casually used as an equivalent for ‘conservative’ or ‘FG/FF voter’.

Responsive web design uses fluid grids so layouts adjust dynamically to browser width. This ensures that text content views equally well on desktop, smartphone, and tablet: the columns scale up or down depending on the device. I think journals are uploading print layouts with fixed grids + columns.

Two books side by side. Book on left is ‘A School of Art in Dublin since the 18th Century - A History of the National College of Art & Design’ by John Turpin. Book on right is ‘Dreams and Responsibilities - The State and the Arts in Independent Ireland’ by Brian P Kennedy.
Excerpt from Dreams and Responsibilities by Brian P Kennedy. Text reads: After the Treaty, the Ministry of Fine Arts was abolished but nobody told the Secretary, Labhrás Breathnach. He wrote to Diarmuid O hEigeartaigh, Secretary to Dáil Eireann: 'Would you kindly let me know if anything has been definitely decided about this Dept. I have not received any official instructions yet as to its termination so I am undecided whether to stay or not'. O hEigeartaigh replied that the Department of Fine Arts had been merged with the Department of Education. It did not re-emerge for another sixty years.
My two favourite books telling the story of the relationship between the Irish state and the arts. To read them is to see many things change across time, and also to recognise that certain things just keep arising, over and over again in slightly different guises.

Very sad to hear Paul Durcan has left us. I did the publicity on Daddy. Daddy when it came out with Blackstaff Press. He had a tender soul, and a mischievous sense of humour, and gave readings that audiences lapped up. His readers loved him, and for a reason.
