I did a one shot where I killed the players in 5e with a dragon, and then switched to that being the backstory for a goblin version of Stand By Me using Mazes (each type was a different character). Worked great, lots of fun, would have been better if the players had seen the movie…

And one of those publishers who were sued was … Wizards of the Coast. “The Primal Order” caused Palladium to sue WotC, nearly bankrupting them (which caused a boycott of Palladium at the time).

Really interested to read about “Fantasy Wargaming”. Like “what were they even thinking?” And “did they actually play this even once?”

Isn’t the character on top of the eidolon a halfling? Stealing gems and appears to be barefooted

And if variations are grouped together, why is Giant Boar under G in the “Animals” appendix while Boar is under B in the “Animals” appendix?

Also confusing because this makes the second “5th edition” Talislanta.

While I prefer the original system (the original “d20” system - die roll + stat + skill = degree of success; used to resolve everything, predates WoTC 3.0 D&D d20, ironic since they use to distribute Talislanta and Jonathon Tweet worked on both), take what I can get

Finally got to run a one shot using @9thlevelgames.bsky.social MAZES rules - a goblin version of the movie Stand By Me (after a quick 5e TPK for the bodies to go see). Players had fun, and probably would have enjoyed it more if they were old enough to have seen the movie. Youts…

Because let’s face it - no player is going to enjoy that combat other than the setup flavor of “two statues are actually solid rats that swarm out and attack you!” So in less time that it would take to roll and figure out initiative, the effect of the combat is resolved (and the DM flavors it)

And then depending on how fast they clean the rats determines how many hits they might take (using static monster damage). Rat swarm is AC 10, 24 HP, 7 damage (3 if “bloodied”). One player clears one swarm with two hits, so make the DC 15, and if they hit they take 3 hp, 7 if they fail

Basically a combat like this would last one or two rounds, with players maybe hit once or twice. But with 5 initiative rolls, and probably a dozen attack rolls and 8-12 damage rolls. Just hand wave the combat with a single attack to determine how fast the players clear the swarm

I need to crunch the numbers, but a combat between a party of mid/high level players (eg 4 8th level) vs a “horde” of low level monsters (eg 4 rat swarms) can be reduced to like a trap, but players roll attack instead of save. They hit they take half damage, or full damage if they miss #dnd #math

Just ran the first of three “one night Strahd”. The pacing is tough, 5e combat bogs, and I’m not sure if splitting the party with the elevator trap is a good idea. Only took 5 hours.

I literally just watched it before bed here! And I could have sworn G1-3 had said where in Greyhawk they took place (even dug my copied out to double check)

“Back in my day, we recovered one hp per day of rest (5 per day after 30 days of rest), and we liked it!”

I ran this as a 5E Feywild based adventure and it was a lot of fun. Players didn’t figure out the “secret” of the game, but they came close (and survived anyway, having assumed an Arch Fey)

Excited to try out new building interior terrain system - Mansions of Madness style “rooms” joined with my 3D printed walls (and magnetic doors)

Cyborg Commando had a unique percent system - you rolled two d10s and then multiplied the two numbers together, giving a much stronger curve. Not sure if any game before or since has used that

Jon Peterson’s (@increment.bsky.social) “Playing at the World Volume 2: The Three Pillars of Role-Playing Games” goes into wonderful detail of the development of “harder to hit” (AC) vs “soaks damage” through the history leading to D&D (and beyond). Well worth reading multiple times

3.5e version of Unearthed Arcana was very good at showing “if you use this variant, here’s how it breaks/changes other things and what you have to adjust (and don’t mix this with this other variant)”
A great, underrated book to read to think about system balance/design
